Hypervigilance was first catalogued by psychiatrist Abram Kardiner in combat veterans returning from the First World War. Decades later, attachment researchers found the same threat-scanning reflex in children raised around unpredictable parental moods — the same nervous system pattern, learned in a very different room. We tend to think perceptiveness is a gift some people are born with, but for many it’s a survival skill — the ability to feel tension before a word is spoken is often a nervous system that once needed to predict the storm

Stephen Porges named the process neuroception — the pre-conscious scan the vagus nerve runs on every room you walk into. For adults who grew up needing to predict a parent's mood, that scan never really turns off. Read more

China's AI Companies May Be 'Distilling' America's AI Models

In March, Anthropic's Claude "quietly deployed software to spy on China-based customers," reports the Washington Post — apparently to unmask Chinese rivals "suspected of hijacking its technology to make their own AI tools smarter." Last week Anthropic removed the spyware "after a software developer revealed its existence and privacy advocates criticized Anthropic, saying it had surveilled its own users." Anthropic's tracking code was designed in part to catch Chinese firms... Read more
