Hyper-vigilance isn’t a personality trait — it’s a stress response first documented in combat veterans, and researchers later found the same scanning-for-danger reflex in children raised around unpredictable moods

Hypervigilance was first catalogued by psychiatrist Abram Kardiner in combat veterans returning from the First World War. Decades later, attachment researchers found the same threat-scanning reflex in children raised around unpredictable parental moods — the same nervous system pattern, learned in a very different room.

Not so much James Bond, more Mission Impossible - 007 First Light was originally more of an ensemble piece, says IO Interactive

IO Interactive once considered making 007 First Light more of an ensemble piece than it turned out to be. In other words, the game would have been less about James Bond on his own and more about him and a team of agents working together. Read more Read more

J-space на микромоделях. Новая интерпретация открытия Anthropic

Read more

Fine, electric mountain bikes don’t suck

Cheater, I'd grumble between huffs as yet another e-bike rider casually skittered past me on a steep ascent. OpenAI spent two years telling courts it couldn’t search its own training data — then a deposition suggested it had already built the tools to do exactly that

The New York Times and Daily News have accused OpenAI of concealing internal tools capable of searching its training data and ChatGPT conversation logs for copyrighted material, escalating a copyright battle that could reshape the economics of generative AI. The plaintiffs are now asking the court to sanction OpenAI for allegedly obstructing discovery. Read more

Six million people lost power during the 1989 solar storm — but the damage in New Jersey showed why the next one could be far worse

The 1989 geomagnetic storm is remembered as Quebec's nine-hour blackout. The more revealing casualty was a transformer at Salem nuclear station in New Jersey, quietly destroyed the same night — a warning about how solar storms actually damage a modern grid. Read more

Adults who prefer being early enough to sit in the parking lot for twenty minutes aren’t over-scheduled, they’ve discovered that the transition between somewhere and somewhere else is one of the few moments no one is asking anything of them

The twenty-minute parking lot pause looks like poor time management. It is actually a self-engineered threshold ritual — a small, defended pocket of autonomy in a day otherwise structured by other people's demands. Read more

Psychology says people who do their best thinking alone and feel drained after socialising aren’t holding themselves back — research suggests they’re processing information more deeply than the room around them

There is a familiar misreading of quiet people in loud rooms. They are assumed to be hesitant, under-confident, uninterested, or simply not pushing themselves hard enough. But the person who does their best thinking alone and feels emptied out after a long stretch of socialising may not be falling short of the room. They may ... Read more Read more

In 1991, two researchers at Cambridge pointed a grainy camera at the Trojan Room coffee pot and wired it into the building’s network, because they were tired of climbing the stairs to find the jug empty — and without meaning to, they built the first webcam

In 1991, two researchers at the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory pointed a grey-scale camera at a coffee jug to save themselves a wasted trip down the stairs — and accidentally built the world's first webcam, watched by 2.4 million people before it was switched off in 2001. Read more

The Great Green Wall stretches 8,000 km across Africa’s entire width — from the Atlantic coast to the Red Sea, a green belt long enough to cross the United States twice

The African Union's Great Green Wall is meant to run 8,000 kilometres from Senegal's Atlantic coast to Djibouti's Red Sea shore — a belt of restored land long enough to cross the continental United States twice. Nearly two decades in, only a fraction has actually taken root, and the project has quietly redefined what a wall of trees can be. Read more

Psychology says people who find the first year of retirement harder than any year of work aren’t failing to enjoy freedom — they’re grieving a structure that provided identity, routine, and the low-level human contact that kept loneliness at bay without anyone noticing

My dad spent the better part of forty years walking into the same office. When he finally retired, we threw him the dinner, made the toasts, and told him he’d earned every slow morning coming his way. He smiled and agreed. For most of history people met their partners through family, church or friends; now, the most common way American couples meet is online — algorithms displacing the matchmaker once played by family and friends

For most of the twentieth century, finding a partner in America was a community project. Family made introductions. Church socials, neighbourhood gatherings, and the friend who knew someone worth meeting did the quiet work of pairing people off. That arrangement held for most of the century, but no longer. A study of American couples found ... Read more Read more
