Ramaswamy Plays BuzzFeed For Attention

Vivek Ramaswamy was obviously missing the adrenaline rush of being in the headlines. His faux-activist plunge into BuzzFeed stock has cost him less than $5 million and has already paid dividends in more free press than he’s had since he dropped out of the Republican presidential race in January. But let’s not mistake this for an activist play. BuzzFeed is controlled by founder-CEO Jonah Peretti through his supervoting stock. Ramaswamy... Read more

Last week Kaya and I reported on a broad restructuring at TikTok, which included layoffs in the U.S. and other countries. Among the many changes were those directly linked to creators and publishers. The latter could signal an increased effort to court media companies and bring more professional content to the app, best known for its user-generated short videos. For instance, the company is introducing a team called publisher monetization... Ilya Sutskever, a co-founder and former chief scientist at OpenAI, is currently the most sought-after entrepreneur in town. We don’t yet have the details on Sutskever’s next role. But we wouldn’t be surprised if he joins an OpenAI competitor, like Anthropic or Elon Musk’s xAI, moves that could further strain his relationship with OpenAI’s leader Sam Altman. Or he could start his own company that competes with his former employer.Sutskever... Read more

Nvidia has become the world's third-most-valuable company by selling chips to power artificial intelligence. Now it's also one of the biggest corporate buyers of cloud computing services. Last week, Nvidia said it has committed to spend nearly $9 billion on cloud computing in the coming years, which involves spending with Amazon, Microsoft, Google and Oracle. That’s a huge jump from the $3.5 billion Nvidia said it had committed to cloud... Read more

While Elon Musk may get credit for SpaceX’s ambitious mission to “make life multi-planetary,” SpaceX’s org chart confirms something long understood by insiders at the $180 billion rocket startup—President and Chief Operating Officer Gwynne Shotwell is running the show. Shotwell oversees nearly every single team at SpaceX, which has around 13,000 employees at facilities spread across California, Texas and Florida. You’re going to hear the term “supercomputer” a lot in the coming months. It’s just a cool way of saying “a large cluster of servers running Nvidia chips,” but without as many words. Anyone who’s anyone in AI is going to talk about their supercomputer, and we imagine that Elon Musk will be one of them—especially after Anissa on Friday reported on his supercomputing promises involving xAI, which he has... Six months ago, Freyr Battery announced that the next-generation battery it was developing had hit a snag: The equipment it had ordered to automate production wasn’t working properly, and it wasn’t clear when it would be. So Freyr wouldn’t begin to sell batteries—and generate revenue—as soon as it had planned. Investors walloped Freyr’s shares, halving their price the day after the Nov. 9 announcement. Read more

Elon Musk has said publicly that his artificial intelligence startup xAI will need a whopping 100,000 specialized semiconductors to train and run the next version of its conversational AI Grok. To make the chatbot smarter, he’s recently told investors xAI plans to string all these chips into a single, massive computer—or what he’s calling a “gigafactory of compute.” In a May presentation to investors, Musk said he wants to get... “A lot of times men don’t really realize what they’re capable of pulling off,” Andrew Weitz was saying over the phone. “But the game has changed these days and if they don’t keep up with fashion, they’re going to get left behind.” Weitz knows of what he speaks, being a noted men’s style consultant who dresses many top entertainment executives and tech savants in Los Angeles, New York and Northern... From the U.S. Open to Art Basel, to the conclaves of Sun Valley and Cannes, the summer months are rife with networking opportunities. They’re also hot, sticky and known for air conditioning set to full blast. Throw in frequent travel and the sheer range of dress codes, and the question of what to wear can become tricky at best. The answer? “It’s all about an effortless, gentle vibe that’s not... Read more

Microsoft’s Satya Nadella and Nvidia’s Jensen Huang made plenty of news this week. But what about Charles Barkley? The legendary NBA-player-turned-broadcaster’s remarks on a podcast yesterday seemed to suggest that TNT’s hit halftime and postgame show “Inside The NBA” could be nearing its end if the network’s parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery, doesn’t successfully renew its TV rights deal with the league. And last night, Bloomberg’s Lucas Shaw reported the... Read more

The world has changed a lot in the last four years, and for better or for worse, that has greatly impacted our travel plans. For several summers since 2020, we found our vacations foiled—whether it was travel restrictions, the closures of our favorite hotels, or, ultimately, catching up on a never-ending backlog of weddings and other delayed social engagements. As a result, many of us were stuck at home and... Read more

The handful of tech companies that have taken the leap into the public markets over the past nine months have been sure to show investors heavy profits (Instacart and Arm), fast growth (Rubrik, Ibotta and Klaviyo) or a clear story about how they’re benefitting from artificial intelligence (Astera Labs and Reddit). Consumer startups aren’t getting a lot of attention from venture capitalists these days, except if they’re powered by artificial intelligence. (More on that later.) That disinterest has made it particularly challenging for VC-backed startups wrestling with a slowdown in consumer demand after a spike during the pandemic. One path forward: business sales. That pivot has been underway at Calm.com. The San Francisco-based parent of the meditation and wellness app raised... Read more
