Sales of electric vehicles are slowing and some automakers are rethinking their plans for EVs. But readers of The Information remain enthusiastic about EVs. Nearly two-thirds of respondents to our most recent survey said they own an EV, with Teslas by far the most popular choice. By comparison, a March Gallup survey found that 7% of Americans owned EVs. Moreover, a majority of our survey respondents who don’t own an... Read more

How good was Nvidia's quarterly earnings call? Let us count the ways. Everyone is buzzing about Nvidia’s revenue nearly quadrupling to $26 billion in the quarter ended in April, mostly from the sale of artificial intelligence server chips. But Nvidia immediately shared three other pieces of good news: a strong sales forecast, a 10-to-1 stock split and a bigger dividend. As if that wasn't enough, Nvidia CFO Colette Kress and... 25 Great Books for Summer 2024

During a pivotal scene of “Very Bad Company,” a new satirical novel involving a tech billionaire, a dead body and many bruised egos, a startup’s executives dine at Carbone in Miami, where they receive important news calligraphed inside folded origami animals that cost $5,000 each. I half-expected to find one waiting for me as I sat down to lunch with Emma Rosenblum, the book’s author, at Carbone in New York’s... Read more

Conversational artificial intelligence startups are singing the acquisition blues. As Natasha and I reported on Wednesday, Adept, which raised more than $400 million from investors at a $1 billion-plus valuation to develop artificial intelligence agents, has been exploring a buyout, including from Meta Platforms. A Meta deal is unlikely, though. The news follows Snowflake’s aborted buyout talks with Reka, a large language model developer, for a reported $1 billion-plus price... Read more

Crypto exchange Coinbase is poised for a big boost as the U.S. suddenly looks more likely to approve exchange-traded funds holding ether, giving investors a way to trade the second most popular cryptocurrency as easily as a stock. The Electric: China’s Iron-Based Batteries Are Even Cheaper Than We Thought

On Monday, we reported that the going rate for iron-based batteries in China had plunged to an astonishing $56 per kilowatt hour, 40% below last year’s average outside the country. But we have since learned that the average price is even lower—$47/kWh, half as much as such batteries outside China, according to a survey last month by BloombergNEF, a renewable energy research firm. Hello! These are turbulent times for TikTok employees. On Tuesday, we reported that TikTok is planning significant layoffs—including a large percentage of the roughly 1,000 people working in TikTok’s global user operations, content and marketing teams. The planned cuts are likely to further sap employee morale, already frayed by the possibility of a U.S. ban and past restructurings. The company is also poised to make a fresh push into Europe, which... Inside Google a year ago, conventional wisdom held that artificial intelligence chatbots from OpenAI and Microsoft would shrink its lucrative search advertising business—and fast. Not only was that wrong, but the company’s annual event for advertisers on Tuesday showed how conversational AI can take that business to new heights.Google executives said the company will start testing ads directly in AI-generated answers that summarize content from the web to answer certain... Sam Altman’s naughty streak has been key to his success. This week, it may have gotten him in trouble. The OpenAI CEO came under fire yesterday after the actress Scarlett Johansson said she, through her lawyers, complained to OpenAI after they used a voice that resembled her own for its ChatGPT assistant. New York isn’t known for its roomy apartments, which is why my electric piano is currently gathering dust on top of my kitchen cabinets. So I was especially excited to use Suno, an artificial intelligence music generator. It turns simple text descriptions like “a dark disco song about when you're not around” and “a romantic garage song about being trapped in an AI music factory” into songs that often sound... OpenAI and its artificial intelligence rivals get all the headlines, but few venture-backed companies have benefited more from the AI boom than CoreWeave, a cloud provider. That's thanks to Nvidia, which allocated some of its precious AI server chips to CoreWeave rather than large clouds like Amazon Web Services, prompting startups and even Microsoft to collectively commit to spending billions of dollars to rent CoreWeave’s servers. On Friday, CoreWeave said... Read more
