With 'electro-agriculture,' plants can produce food in the dark and with 94% less land, bioengineers say

Photosynthesis, the chemical reaction that enables almost all life on Earth, is extremely inefficient at capturing energy -- only around 1% of light energy that a plant absorbs is converted into chemical energy within the plant. Bioengineers propose a radical new method of food production that they call 'electro-agriculture.' The method essentially replaces photosynthesis with a solar-powered chemical reaction that more efficiently converts CO2 into an organic molecule that plants would be genetically engin

Developing an antibody to combat age-related muscle atrophy

As we age, our muscles atrophy. Earlier this year, researchers found that hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), a protein critical in skeletal muscle development loses its functionality due to nitration as we age. Now, the same team has developed a monoclonal antibody that blocks the nitration sites of HGF, effectively preventing the protein's age induced loss of function. Their findings were validated utilizing rat muscles cell culture. Read more ›

Automated 3D computer vision model offers a new tool to measure and understand dairy cow behavior and welfare

Dairy cows typically rest for 10 or more hours a day, so a dry, clean, and comfortable place -- such as a freestall -- to lie down and rest is essential for their health, well-being, and production performance.
