Hidden DNA mechanisms of rare genetic diseases uncovered

Researchers have uncovered how specific DNA rearrangements called inverted triplications contribute to the development of various genetic diseases. The study reveals that during DNA repair, segments may switch templates within inverted repeats, leading to structural variations and gene dosage alterations, impacting conditions like MECP2 duplication syndrome. This discovery opens new avenues for understanding and treating rare genetic disorders.

Research led by John Antonakis at the University of Lausanne found that targeted training produced a medium improvement in how charismatic people appeared to others—evidence that charisma is not merely something you are born with, but a set of behaviours that can be deliberately strengthened.

Charisma has a reputation problem. We tend to treat it as a private voltage: some people walk into a room with it, others do not, and the rest of us are left admiring or resenting the difference. The research led by John Antonakis at the University of Lausanne points to a less mystical reading. In ... Read more Read more

A UCLA study has identified a hidden Achilles' heel in aggressive small cell cancers that have resisted new treatments for decades. Scientists found that tumors lacking the RB gene become critically dependent on the protein E2F3 for survival. Blocking E2F3 shut down tumor growth in laboratory models, and existing FDA-approved drugs may be able to exploit this vulnerability. The discovery could pave the way for faster development of more effective... Read more
