The US paused a weapons shipment to Israel. Is it a real shift in policy?

The US has offered unconditional military aid to Israel throughout the war in Gaza. Israel’s operation in Rafah, the southernmost city in Gaza that houses more than a million displaced Palestinians, may have finally forced the Biden administration to do something it has been hesitant to do: pause a weapons shipmen

Read more

Adult children who feel almost nothing on routine calls with a parent — not love, not irritation, not connection, just dutiful neutrality — aren’t emotionally numb, they’re correctly registering that the relationship was never quite built, and the absence of feeling is the body’s honest report on a closeness that was assigned rather than developed

There is a particular emotional flavor that some adult children feel during their regular calls with a parent, and that very few of them ever describe out loud, because the feeling itself sounds, when stated plainly, like a kind of indictment. The flavor is not love. It is not warmth. It is not irritation, exactly. ... Read more Read more

Read more

Read more

Read more

How weddings got (even more) expensive

I have been a bridesmaid six times. I’ve traveled across the country and outside of it to see my friends get married. I’ve planned bachelorette parties in New Orleans and gone to bridal showers in Arizona. I love love. It’s a beautiful thing to witness. What’s more likely to be sentient: an ant or ChatGPT?

Sentience is hot these days. These tropical forests are critically important. Why is this religious sect cutting them down?

Over the last few decades, wildfires, farmers, and cattle ranchers have razed millions of acres of tropical forests across the planet. Much of that deforestation has occurred in three countries: Brazil, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Indonesia. What the Supreme Court still has left to decide this term

Being a Supreme Court justice is a pretty sweet gig. The Court typically hears about 60 cases a year, plus a smattering of “shadow docket” cases that receive expedited review.
