The many layers of May December

Natalie Portman and Charles Melton in May December. | Courtesy of NetflixMay December isn’t camp. So what is it? In the opening moments of Todd Haynes’s May December, scandalous tabloid subject-turned-homemaker Gracie (Julianne Moore) opens a refrigerator, dramatically accompanied by a sudden piano sting and an ominous camera zoom.
The twist? They might not have enough hot dogs for their upcoming cookout.
If that strikes you as funny, you’re not alone. This is a film that reportedly had audiences laughing.

The truth about 10,000 steps a day: the number wasn’t science, it was the brand name of a pedometer a Japanese company launched around the 1964 Tokyo Olympics — and later research finds real health benefits from as few as 4,000 steps

The daily step goal on hundreds of millions of wrists and phones did not come out of a laboratory. It came out of a marketing department. In the mid-1960s, riding the fitness buzz around the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, the Japanese clock and instrument company Yamasa released a step counter called the Manpo-kei. The name means, ...

New DNA Tech Identifies Soldier Killed in America's Revolution in 1780

South Carolina's pine forests "have spent centuries hiding a secret as old as America itself," reports CBS News: In August 1780, British and American soldiers clashed there, leading to a terrible defeat for the Continental army [fighting for the 13 colonies rebelling against England]. Battlefield archaeologists Jim Legg and Steve Smith have been studying the site for decades, but recently, they made a shocking discovery: The sandy soil was home... Read more

Four easy ways to live longer

My grandmother lived to be 97. For decades she was active in her church, had long friendships with her sorority sisters, and she even got to see all six of her grandchildren go off to college. The US is better off than it was in 1976. So why does it feel worse?

America in the summer of 1976 was not in a good place.  The president who presided over the country’s Bicentennial, President Gerald Ford, only had the job because the previous president and vice president had resigned in disgrace, making him the sole US president who was never actually elected. The Vietnam War had ended in […] Read more

The manly appeal of Zohran Mamdani

After two successive women lost the race for president — and with the GOP increasingly claiming the testosterone-fueled “manosphere” — a lot of Democratic insiders are starting to worry the party is a bit too low-T. A fringe attack on voting rights just got four votes on the Supreme Court

The premise of the Republican Party’s lawsuit in Watson v. Slaughter, one of two “unitary executive” cases that the Supreme Court handed down on Monday, is the culmination of a nearly 40-year fight by Republican judges to expand the powers of the presidency. How the rich got stingy

Historically, being ultra-wealthy meant that there was an obligation to share a chunk of it with the world. Gilded Age industrialists like John D.
