Has the EU’s Graphene Flagship hit its 10-year targets?

In the spring of 2010, physicist Jari Kinaret received an email from the European Commission. The EU’s executive arm was seeking pitches from scientists for ambitious new megaprojects. Known as flagships, the initiatives would focus on innovations that could transform Europe’s scientific and industrial landscape.  Kinaret, a professor at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden, examined the initial proposals. “I was not very impressed,” the 60-year-old tells TNW. “I thought they could find better ideas.

NYT: 'Meta's Embrace of AI Is Making Its Employees Miserable'

"Meta's embrace of AI is making its employees miserable," reports the New York Times. And "After Meta said late last month that it would start tracking employees' computer use, hundreds of workers spoke up." (One employee even told Meta's CTO in an internal post, "Your callousness to the concerns of your own employees is concerning." In an internal post last month, Meta told its U.S. employees that it was making... Read more

Read more

Read more

The person who keeps their thermostat at the same temperature their parents kept theirs may not just be frugal — they may still be living inside a household rule that ended thirty years ago

Most household defaults — the thermostat setting, the lights, the leftovers — aren't choices. They're procedural memory from a house that ended decades ago, wearing the costume of personal values. Read more

Read more

Scientists have uncovered a hidden “stop-scratching” signal in the nervous system that tells your brain when enough scratching is enough. The discovery centers on a molecule called TRPV4, which acts like part of an internal braking system for itch relief. In experiments involving chronic itch similar to eczema, mice missing this signal scratched less often—but when they did scratch, they couldn’t stop. Read more

Weekly poll: would you buy a Motorola Razr 70, Razr 70+ or Razr 70 Ultra? Which one?

While this year the big news in the Motorola Razr family is the launch of the first book-style foldable, the Razr brand is still very much associated with flip foldables. The company refreshed its offerings with three new models: the Razr 70, Razr 70+ and Razr 70 Ultra. As usual, these will have slightly different names in the US: Razr 2026, Razr+ 2026 and Razr Ultra 2026. Let’s start with... Read more

People who can’t relax until every email is answered often aren’t disciplined — many learned early that being unreachable, even briefly, was treated as a personal failure rather than a normal human limit

I’m 44 and I realized last Sunday that the reason I keep my phone face-down on the counter isn’t a habit, it’s that twenty years of being on-call for everyone trained my body to treat a screen-up phone as a job I haven’t clocked out of

The face-down phone isn't a habit, it's a body trying to enforce a boundary against a workplace that has no walls. What twenty years of being on-call actually trained into me, and why the gesture matters more than the rule. Read more
