The quiet reason some adults find compliments harder to receive than criticism isn’t low self-esteem, it’s that praise was often the warning sign that something was about to be asked of them

The flinch at compliments is often mistaken for low self-esteem, but for many adults it's a learned association from childhoods where kind words reliably preceded a request. The body remembers the equation long after the household is gone.

Read more

Range anxiety

The storm developed quickly over west central Illinois on April 17th, first as a single high-intensity system called a supercell, and then later that evening transforming into a long squall line of thunderstorms. Air conditioning is not a moral failure

As temperatures blew past 100°F in cities across Europe last week, it was difficult to tell what was generating more hot air: the weather or the discourse around the right way to endure it. On the western side of the Atlantic, the answer was almost uniformly obvious: air conditioning. Just around 20 percent of European […] Read more

A film about the founding of OpenAI was written, cast, directed by Luca Guadagnino, test-screened to warm reviews, and then quietly shelved by the studio that financed it approximately 4 months after that studio invested $50 billion in the company the film depicted unfavorably

There is a version of the “Artificial” story that is an ordinary Hollywood development story. A production got made, got tested, and found itself without a distribution home for reasons that, while connected to a specific business relationship, are not uncommon in an industry where dozens of completed films each year fail to reach audiences ... People with a richer vocabulary for their inner life have measurably lower rates of depression — not because they feel less, but because they feel more precisely

Consider two people at the end of a difficult meeting. The first registers that they feel bad. The second registers that they feel humiliated — not angry, not embarrassed, not disappointed, but specifically humiliated. The feeling is not more intense in the second case. It is more precise. And that precision, according to a growing ... Read more Read more

In 1977, Jerry Ehman was paging through computer printouts from Ohio State’s Big Ear telescope when he saw a 72-second signal so strong and so cleanly from the direction of Sagittarius that he circled the column in red ballpoint and wrote a single word in the margin: Wow!

On August 15, 1977, Ohio State's Big Ear radio telescope recorded a 72-second narrow-band signal from Sagittarius that was 30 times louder than background noise — sitting almost exactly on the hydrogen line where SETI researchers had been listening since 1959. Jerry Ehman circled it in red ballpoint days later. It has never been heard again. Read more
