Rising AI Costs Are Becoming a Problem For Even Investors

In recent months, a lot of discussion has centered around the rising costs of AI, with even large, sophisticated public companies like Uber blowing through their 2026 AI budgets in a matter of months.Even venture capitalists are feeling the pain. One partner at a large fund told me that they previously gave five of their staffers enterprise Claude accounts to help them with their work. In recent weeks, those usage-based accounts have cost the firm upwards of $1,000 per day per account as the staffers’ usage

The cost of running a top-tier AI query dropped 280-fold in roughly 18 months — from $20 per million tokens in late 2022 to seven cents by late 2024, a price collapse with no real parallel in the history of computing

The most important AI chart for startups may not be the one showing larger models, higher benchmark scores or billion-dollar training runs. It may be the one showing something quieter: the price of asking a capable model a question has collapsed. Stanford’s 2025 AI Index Report, working with data from Epoch AI and Artificial Analysis, ... Read more Read more

Read more

SaaS (orca + pi agent)

Why Open-Source Models Are Benefitting From The White House Clampdown

Open-source AI is emerging as a beneficiary of the Trump administration’s recent rapid-fire policy changes towards AI regulation—and of rising costs. Developers and executives have told me that they’ve been burned by building apps on top of closed-source models like Anthropic's Fable 5, only to see the model withdrawn shortly after its release. Developers are increasingly interested in using more open-source AI, since it’s hard for the government to prevent... Some of the most important business lessons show up in post-mortem reports. Consider a marketing campaign for the launch of a new product. If leaders take the time to analyze their efforts after the results are in, they can determine which of their initial assumptions held true, what surprises they should have anticipated, and how they can improve their strategy going forward.
