Nobody talks about why middle class habits — the overscheduled weekends, the obsessive home improvement, the constant low-grade planning for a future that never quite arrives — aren’t ambition, they’re the anxiety of people who grew up close enough to precarity to remember it, and have been quietly running from that memory ever since

The tape measure in my hand trembled slightly as I realized my weekend home improvement rituals weren't self-improvement at all — they were the desperate movements of someone who'd inherited their parents' poverty trauma and had been unconsciously fleeing from it ever since.

iMac Update Expected This Year, Model With OLED Display Also in Works

Apple has finished development of a new iMac that it plans to release later this year, according to a report today from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. The updated iMac is one of 11 new Mac models that Apple plans to release over the next two years or so. The next iMac will unsurprisingly have a newer chip, but the report did not indicate if Apple plans to use the existing M5... Read more

I've watched all of Stuart Fails to Save the Universe and it's a smarter spinoff than we've given it credit for — ride through the rough first episode to reach sitcom glory

Stuart Fails to Save the Universe is the underdog of 2020s TV spinoffs, and I mean that in the best possible way. In fact, I've basically forgotten The Big Bang Theory existed. Read more

Chasing happiness can be the thing that scares it off: research suggests those who prize being happy above all else often end up lonelier and less content

What follows is reading and reflection on published psychology research, not advice. We are writers, not psychologists or therapists. The studies here are observational and experimental work on group averages, and a pattern across a sample is not a diagnosis or a prescription for any one reader’s inner life. You would expect that the people ... Read more Read more

Psychology suggests memory is not a recording but a story we rebuild each time: in one experiment, a quarter of people came to ‘remember’ being lost in a mall as a child — an event that never happened

Picture a memory you are sure of. Not a fuzzy one, a solid one. Say a childhood scene where you got separated from your parents in a big shop, felt that cold drop in your stomach, and then a stranger or a shop assistant brought you back. You can almost see the aisle. You remember ... Read more Read more

Finland, a country long invaded and overshadowed by its neighbors, built the most trusted education system in the world by doing almost the exact opposite of what everyone else believed worked

Finland did build one of the world’s most admired education systems around trust rather than constant inspection, competition and high-stakes testing. It did not, however, win an objective global title for the “most trusted education system.” No authoritative international league table measures that claim. The more defensible point is also the more interesting one. At ... Read more Read more

Psychology suggests we don’t reason toward truth so much as defend what we already believe: we seek out the facts that confirm us and quietly wave away the rest — the ‘confirmation bias’ baked into how we think

In 1998, a Tufts psychologist named Raymond Nickerson published a long review article pulling together decades of scattered experiments under one heading. The title called confirmation bias a ubiquitous phenomenon in many guises. What he described was a habit most of us would recognise if we caught ourselves doing it, which is exactly the problem: ... The Gulf has $100B to spend on AI and it still can’t buy its way out of Nvidia — the reason is a two-decade software moat nobody in Riyadh can rewrite

In 1973, when OPEC's oil embargo revealed how much of the industrialised world ran on Gulf petroleum, the region's monarchies discovered they had bought themselves a kind of leverage that money alone could not manufacture. Read more

Venezuela’s earthquake response was not built by the state or the UN — it was assembled in three hours by diaspora coders with Claude and Replit, and that inversion is the real story

The prevailing story about AI in a disaster zone is that it belongs to governments and large NGOs: satellite imagery pipelines at FEMA, damage models at the World Bank, logistics dashboards at the UN. When twin earthquakes reportedly ripped through northern Venezuela last month, that story broke. Read more

In April 1967, a Palo Alto history teacher named Ron Jones ran a five-day classroom experiment called ‘The Third Wave’ — and by day four, 200 students had joined a movement none of them had been invited to

In five days in April 1967, a 25-year-old history teacher in Palo Alto turned a classroom question about Nazi Germany into a movement of 200 students — using nothing more than posture rules, a salute, and the pleasure of being told what to do. Read more
