The people who say they don’t care what others think are almost never telling the whole truth. What they actually did was move the audience inward, and now they perform for a private version of the same judges they claim to have escaped.

The loudest declarations of not caring what others think usually signal the opposite. The external audience didn't disappear — it got internalised, and the performance kept running on harder-to-reach hardware.

Read more

Digital Freedom:

Read more

The Wollemi pine was known only from ancient fossils until a park ranger rappelled into a canyon outside Sydney in 1994 and found a grove still alive, and the exact location is now a state secret guarded by Australian rangers

In 1994, a New South Wales park ranger abseiled into a hidden canyon outside Sydney and found a grove of conifers last seen in the fossil record 90 million years ago. The Wollemi pine's wild location remains undisclosed — and for biological reasons that have nothing to do with theatre. Read more

Rolex has no owner because of a 1945 foundation a grieving widower built after his wife died — and it’s now the company’s sharpest competitive weapon

When Hans Wilsdorf's wife Florence died in 1944, the Bavarian-born founder of Rolex built a Geneva foundation that has owned every share of the company since 1960. The Pistol shrimp snaps its claw so fast it creates a bubble that briefly reaches 4,700°C — nearly the surface temperature of the sun — and stuns prey with a flash of light the animal itself cannot see

The pistol shrimp's modified claw fires a jet of water fast enough to vaporise the sea around it. When the resulting bubble collapses, temperatures spike to nearly 4,700°C and a flash of light briefly appears — invisible to the shrimp itself. Read more
