There’s a specific kind of guilt that belongs to people who left difficult families and built better lives. It’s not survivor’s guilt exactly. It’s the knowledge that your peace required a distance that someone who raised you experiences as abandonment, and there is no version of the story where everyone is okay.

The guilt of leaving a difficult family isn't irrational — it's the rational response to a situation where someone you love is genuinely hurt by a choice you genuinely needed to make, and no framing resolves both truths into a comfortable story.

The emptiness many people feel after 70 isn’t the absence of purpose – it’s the absence of an audience, and those are completely different problems with completely different solutions

When retirement strips away the daily calls for your expertise, the crushing silence isn't about losing your purpose—it's about losing the people who needed you, and that changes everything about how to fix it. Read more

The case for banning cookie banners

You almost certainly encounter cookie banners all the time. They're the kind of low-level annoyance that just seems to come with being a person on the internet: a pop-up asking you to agree to share some kind of information, with someone, for some purpose. You could find out more, but you don't. No one does. […] Read more

New Book Details Vision Pro's Troubled Launch in Apple Stores

A new book by New York Times labor reporter Noam Scheiber argues that Apple's decade-long erosion of its retail workforce directly contributed to the disappointing launch of the Apple Vision Pro in early 2024 (via WIRED). The book, Mutiny: The Rise and Revolt of the College-Educated Working Class, draws on interviews with Apple Store employees to document how staffing cuts, reduced training, and a shift toward aggressive sales metrics left...

Read more

Europe’s Startup Story Is Getting More Serious, and Cybersecurity Is Leading It

For years, Europe’s startup ecosystem was often discussed in comparative terms. It was compared to Silicon Valley, assessed against U.S. funding levels, and often described as promising but incomplete. That framing is beginning to appear dated. Europe’s startup story is ... Read more

Psychology says the people who actually escape loneliness don’t do it by finding more people – they do it by finally dropping the version of themselves that made real connection impossible in the first place

When I first moved to Saigon, I knew almost nobody. I had my wife, a laptop, and a vague plan to build a content business from our apartment in District 7. By any objective measure, I should have been lonely. I wasn’t. Not really. And for a while I thought that meant I’d figured something ... Read more Read more

The most profound disconnect between boomers and younger generations isn’t about avocado toast or laziness — it’s that boomers inherited an economy designed to reward time invested, while millennials and Gen Z are navigating one that rewards attention captured, and the skill sets don’t translate

My dad worked at the same company for most of his career. He started in sales, moved into management, and spent thirty years climbing a ladder that, while imperfect, actually existed. The rungs were visible. The deal was straightforward: show up, work hard, stay loyal, and the system would reward you over time. My brother, ... Read more Read more

Psychology says the most isolating part of retirement isn’t being alone — it’s realizing that most of your relationships were held together by proximity, routine, and utility, not genuine curiosity about who you are

I lost a college friendship years ago. Not to a fight or a falling out, but to the slow, quiet kind of drift that happens when the only thing holding two people together was a shared schedule and a dining hall. We’d been close for four years, the kind of close where you assume it’ll ... Read more Read more

Psychology suggests if you still write things down on paper instead of your phone you aren’t resisting progress — you’ve found something that works and are practicing the increasingly rare skill of not replacing it simply because something newer arrived, and that skill, applied consistently, turns out to predict a surprising number of other things about how you make decisions

I keep a physical notebook for first drafts and interview notes. I know it’s inefficient. I know there are apps that would let me search, sync, tag, and organise everything in ways a paper notebook never could. I’ve tried them. Several times. And every time, I’ve gone back to the notebook. For years I felt ... Read more Read more
