My father became someone I dreaded visiting somewhere in his late 60s — not suddenly, not through any single thing, but through the slow accumulation of a bitterness I watched arrive like weather and settle into his personality as though it had always been there, and the hardest part was not the bitterness itself but the fact that I could see exactly where it had come from and could not find a way to say so without making it worse

I watched the same hands that once fought for workers' rights gradually curl into permanent fists against a world that had moved on without him, and the tragedy wasn't his anger—it was that he was right about everything except what to do with it.

Read more

Can the UK’s Tech reset deliver real business outcomes?

Let’s axe some acronyms, Whitehall red tape and connect Government policy with real Tech business outcomes. Before our new UK Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, began commuting to “Number 10” on Monday, Tech bosses, policy leads and government officials were celebrating and catastrophising – in fairly equal measure – over plans to axe the Department for ... Most of what you do all day runs on habit, not choice — but a new study found the habits are usually working for you, not against you

Researchers tracked 105 people six times a day for a week. About two-thirds of what they did was triggered by habit, and nearly nine in ten actions were carried out on autopilot. The surprise wasn't the size of the autopilot — it was how often the automatic thing and the intended thing turned out to be the same. Read more

In a classic experiment, people preferred to repeat 90 seconds of painfully cold water rather than 60 seconds of the same pain because the longer trial ended just one degree warmer, revealing that memory often judges an experience by its worst moment and its ending rather than by how long it lasted

There is the pain a person lives through, and then there is the pain their memory files away for later. The unsettling part of the classic cold-water experiment is that those two versions of an experience do not always agree. In the study, published in Psychological Science in 1993 by Daniel Kahneman, Barbara Fredrickson, Charles ... Read more Read more

Nobody warns you that apartment hunting in your twenties is really an audit of who you have become against who you assumed you would be by now

I’ve been apartment hunting since April. The original plan, which I’m mildly embarrassed to admit out loud, was to have a place secured by my 27th birthday — as though the rental market, an entity with roughly the emotional warmth of a spreadsheet, was going to respect a deadline I invented purely for narrative satisfaction. ... In 1926, the U.S. government killed Yellowstone’s last wolf pack — and spent the next 69 years watching the park quietly fall apart

In 1926, federal predator-control policy eliminated the last wolf pack from Yellowstone. What followed — eroding riverbanks, vanishing willows, a single beaver colony left in the entire park — took nearly seven decades to understand, and scientists are still arguing about how much the 1995 reintroduction actually reversed.
