An anonymous reader quotes a report from Gizmodo: It appears that Neom -- Saudi Arabia's hugely expensive, architecturally bizarre urban development project -- is floundering and close to collapse. A new report from the Financial Times cites high-level sources within the project to paint a picture of dysfunction and failure at the heart of the quixotic effort. Neom was envisioned as a vast series of fantastical urban developments spread across... Read more ›

After forcing the longest US government shutdown in history, Senate Democrats threw in the towel Sunday night. Eight Democratic senators voted with the Republicans Sunday to advance a deal to reopen the government, even though the deal includes no significant concessions from the GOP or President Donald Trump. The Rodecaster series of podcast mixers have become a mainstay among audio creatives. Last year, the company expanded the line with its first multimedia model — the Rodecaster Video. It was a more niche proposition, aimed at streamers, video podcasters and live producers, and, at $1,200, people with deeper pockets. Today, Rode returns with the Rodecaster Video S (RCV-S), a streamlined version that offers much of the same functionality for... Read more ›

Broadcom and a company called CAMB.AI are teaming up to bring on-device audio translation to a chipset. This would allow devices that use the SoC to complete translation, dubbing and audio description tasks without having to dip into the cloud. In other words, it could massively improve accessibility for consumers. The companies promise ultra-low latency and enhanced privacy, being that all processing is kept local to the user's device. The... Read more ›

On a quiet September morning, Alex Leithiser was out in the woods somewhere in the South on a secret mission: to break into a data center. First, he slipped through a small gap in the facility’s barbed wire fence, and as soon as he hit the ground, he switched clothes, pulling a fresh set from a small backpack. With cameras and alarms all over the data center, Leithiser hoped to... Read more ›

I’ve been hearing a lot about how intense competition is for Series A investments lately. Investors that typically look to invest in more mature startups, say at the Series B or above rounds, are crowding into Series A rounds for fear of missing the next major winner.Like much else these days, artificial intelligence gets the credit (or blame) for this new dynamic. Venture capitalists are watching revenues triple or quadruple... Read more ›

We’ve finally learned the result of a controversial, long-awaited vote that’s generated reams of punditry and put Wall Street on edge. No, I’m not talking about the mayoral election in New York City—I’m talking about the Tesla shareholder vote on Elon Musk’s gigantic compensation package. Musk won with over 75% of the vote, Tesla said at its annual meeting at the company’s Gigafactory in Texas on Thursday. The package will... Read more ›

When Kara Nortman was looking to start a women’s professional soccer team in Los Angeles, she and her co-founders—actress Natalie Portman and entrepreneur Julie Uhrman—took meetings with sports experts in their hometown. The advice they received? It would be unwise to enter a market crowded by the MLB’s Dodgers, the NBA’s Lakers and a half-dozen other franchises. “We talked to everyone who knew sports,” Nortman told me this week, “and...
