Cocoon, Tomb Raider 2, and the pros and cons of being stuck in a game world

One of the many things I've heard said about games that is always bobbing around in my head is a line from Tim Schafer, of Monkey Island and Double Fine fame. He was talking at a Develop conference in Brighton about a decade ago most likely, and he was talking about the problem of the player getting stuck in video games. "Getting stuck," he said, or something along those lines.... Read more ›

PUBG: Battlegrounds' Halloween Battle Royale is now live

PUBG: Battlegrounds' Halloween event is back. After jumping off the "Ghost Ship" you'll enter a spooky Erangel where you’ll need to "loot the land of the dead, craft ghoulish weapons, grow stronger, and fight to be the last team standing". Interestingly, though, the mode will be removed by the time actual Halloween rolls around – the Halloween Battle Royale will only be available from now until midnight UK time on... Read more ›

Sony's live service pivot "may not pay off the way Jim Ryan had once hoped", says industry insider

Sony is reportedly "uncomfortable" about outgoing PlayStation boss Jim Ryan's pivot to games as a service. That's according to Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, who reported yesterday that "even Bungie's expertise has not yet been able to turn PlayStation Studios into a service-game factory". Just days after announcing its $3.6bn Bungie buyout bid, Sony announced back in April 2022 that it would launch more than 10 new live service games over the... Read more ›

Qrth-Phyl and rethinking how we remember video games

Game preservation is one of those topics that we keep returning to with greater and greater frequency. In a week like this, and a year like this, it's not hard to see why. Marvel's Avengers, a mega-budget game that still feels relatively fresh, is being delisted, while Hyenas, which looked weird and rather brilliant, has been cancelled before it's even been released. It's heartbreaking, and my thoughts go out to... Read more ›

Eldritch fishing horror Dredge delays Iron Rig paid expansion into 2024

There's a bit of bad news if you've been looking forward to fishing horror Dredge's first paid expansion: developer Black Salt Games has delayed its release from Q4 this year into 2024. Fixed on Switch: No Man's Sky's custom FSR 2 support dramatically improves the game

The Nintendo Switch isn't the easiest console to work with. Packing a low-power mobile processor with technology dating back to 2015, it lacks the technological grunt to keep pace with last-gen console systems - and this can result in some lacklustre third-party ports. In putting together this piece, we decided to circle back and examine some of the most disappointing Switch conversions - and we were happy to discover a... Read more ›

Dragon's Dogma 2 feels very similar to the original, for better and worse

Don't go into Dragon's Dogma 2 expecting it to feel massively different from Dragon's Dogma or Dark Arisen. Despite the dozen years since the original game's launch (Dragon's Dogma 2 is set to arrive for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in early 2024), there's no huge change in gameplay, while the visual style of Capcom's fantasy RPG series also feels familiar. The game's open world is way more... Read more ›

Epic Games acquired Mediatonic back in March 2021 after the studio's battle royale Fall Guys blew up in popularity. The deal was meant to secure Mediatonic's future. Now, despite the studio remaining open, that future looks very different... Read more ›

Game of the Week: The impossible becomes the possible in Cocoon

The week's Game of the Week was not a tough pick. Cocoon is astonishing stuff, and happily the most thrilling game I have played this year - quite a thing to say when the year's been as rich as 2023. I reviewed the game yesterday, but I was very taken with Polygon's piece, by Grayson Morley. Morley writes this: "A late-game puzzle involves the creation of an impossibility. Something that...
