Assassin's Creed Shadows' reveal gives us our first look at the series' revamped technology

Assassin's Creed Shadows has finally been revealed. After a short CG trailer debuted a few weeks ago, Ubisoft has finally unveiled a lengthy gameplay demo for the upcoming title. As the first current-gen only effort in the long running series, it seems poised to take advantage of current-gen technologies, like ray tracing. At the same time, early impressions suggest a game that might provide a more iterative uplift over previous... Read more ›

Beyond FromSoftware: the Soulslike mechanics that turned a series into a genre

From Demon's Souls to Elden Ring, FromSoftware's games have had a singular impact on the last 15 years of design. Game by game, the studio has created beloved rituals, based around precise combat, intricate, looping maps, and storytelling that unfolds in weapon drops and item descriptions as much as cut-scenes and dialogue.Imitators have followed, some of them brilliantly. And so as new ideas have slowly entered the mix from outside... Read more ›

Lessons from Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 - a milestone Unreal Engine 5 release on PC

Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 is the most visually accomplished game released in 2024 to date, and for me it represents the most significant Unreal Engine 5 release next to Epic's own Fortnite. As well being a game with fascinating technology in its own right, with so many developers jumping on the UE5 bandwagon it seems inevitable that Hellblade 2 will be instructive for future developers. There's a lot that the... Read more ›

Demonschool is Persona meets Buffy and I love its 90s vibes

It always amused me, watching Buffy on TV, that nobody else in the school seemed to be aware of what was going on. Buffy and her friends were off slaying vampires and demons and investigating strange happenings that mysteriously occurred repeatedly in this one school, but her peers remained seemingly oblivious. At least, until that prom episode where they finally bothered to thank her. There's a similar occurrence in Demonschool,... Read more ›

Astro Bot channels the pure game design of Nintendo, as PlayStation turns towards families

Few games generated as much joy in the room of their Summer Game Fest demos as Astro Bot, the latest from Astro's Playroom and Astro Bot: Rescue Mission developer Team Asobi. During my three quarters of an hour or so with Astro Bot I just about cleared all of its demo. I say "just about" because, while the main missions accessed from its galaxy-style menu were a family-friendly breeze, a... Read more ›

The rumoured Final Fantasy Tactics remaster is reportedly real, according to Bloomberg's Jason Schreier. After the reveal of Astro Bot on PlayStation 5 at the recent State of Play, Astro's Playroom received an update adding iconic Bloodborne boss Lady Maria and an associated trophy. Game of the Week: Steam Next Fest tells you that summer is here

I did not expect to be walking through a forest at eight this morning. Trees rising out of the sandy earth around me and forming a dense canopy overhead. Buildings poking through the mist. Gnomes or goblins of some kind. Oh god, they're shooting at me! Duck! Run! Get out of here! This is The Explorator, but it could have been something else - Parcel Corps, which combines Crazy Taxi and... Read more ›

Neko Odyssey marries cute cat photography with satisfying sleuthing

The Internet has been devoted to cats since its very beginning. We’ve had cat focused forums, cat-themed flash games, art and even a website dedicated to pictures of cats in sinks, aptly named Cats in Sinks. Not to forget about I Can Haz Cheezburger and Nyan Cat. (Look I can’t list them all, we’d never get to the video game part.) The rise of social media has brought us accounts,... Read more ›

Ark: Survival Ascended is the worst optimised Unreal Engine 5 game we've seen on console

We've seen some poorly optimised Unreal Engine games over the last few years, especially on console as developers try to implement new and impressive visual features within a limited performance budget. Ark: Survival Ascended, a UE5 remake of 2015's Ark: Survival Evolved, might just be the worst to date. In remaking Survival Evolved, originally an Unreal Engine 4 game, over to the new UE5, developer Studio Wildcard opted to tap... Read more ›
