‘Hear’ this Kandinsky painting with Google’s psychedelic AI tool

Google has launched a new AI tool that lets you listen to the sounds that famed artist Vassily Kandinsky may have heard as he painted. The experiment explores the artist’s synesthesia, a neurological condition that causes one sense to trigger another. In Kandinsky’s case, he’d see colors and shape when he heard music, and hear music when he painted. The abstract art pioneer tried to evoke the sensation through his... Read more

Spider legs build webs without the brain’s help — and could inspire robot limbs

Arachnophobes often cite spiders’ unpredictable movement as the basis of their fear, pointing out how each spindly leg seems to lift, flex, and probe with a menacing degree of autonomy. Perhaps unsettlingly, research conducted by my colleagues and I has revealed that each one of a spider’s legs does indeed enjoy a certain independence from the brain – especially in the complex task of web-building. Our study has shown that... Read more

Scotland’s free EV chargers make the rest of the UK look stingy

Nothing in life comes for free. Except nobody seems to have told the highland nation of Scotland that. According to figures from UK EV charging infrastructure trackers Zap-Map, Scotland has the most free electric car chargers in the UK… and by a long stretch too. Think of it like this: Scotland has a population of about 5.5 million, the south east of England has a population of about 9 million.... Read more

Here’s how to do PR when your product is a SECRET

The inherent nature of working in public relations is communicating with the public… hence the term “public.” However, in a strange twist of events, we’re sometimes asked not to communicate (but to also communicate). That can be challenging, but it’s not without merit. This paradox comes into being when there are projects that must remain a secret until launch.  The trick here is creating a public relations plan that maintains... Read more

Did you know you can copy and paste between Apple devices? YOU DO NOW

I have been living the life of a fool. If I needed to copy and paste something between my iPhone and Mac, I would either email it to myself or use a cloud-synced note app like Evernote. Today though, everything changed: because I discovered there’s an in-built way to copy and paste between Apple devices. This morning I needed to move a bit of text from phone to my computer.... Twitter confirms Trump’s ban is permanent, even if he runs again

When Twitter said it had banned Trump, some wondered how permanent the move really was. After all, Twitter long used the justification of “public intestest” when explaining why the president was allowed to remain on the platform after saying things that would get other users banned. Following the Capitol riot, and as Trump would no longer be president just a few days following the ban, the public interest excuse didn’t... Read more

NASA: We should look for polluted planets if we want to find smart ETs

And you shall know them by the pollution in their skies: A team of NASA-funded researchers may have developed a new method for sussing out intelligent extraterrestrial life. TL;DR: It’s nitrogen-dioxide. Up front: Finding evidence of intelligent extraterrestrial life in an infinite universe is, perhaps, the most monumental undertaking a scientist can endeavor to. In order to narrow the field down from trillions of stars, we need search filters. The... Read more

The best consumer tech always sweats the small stuff

This is adapted from Plugged In, TNW’s bi-weekly newsletter on gear and gadgets. Subscribe to it here. There are plenty of bullshit sayings out there — they are the force that powers Facebook’s evil after all — but one of the worst is “don’t sweat the small stuff.” Yes, there are plenty of situations where this is true: if you spent all your time overanalyzing what the angry man at... Anti-trashbug AI scours sky-snaps to spot sea plastic

Scientists from the University of Barcelona have developed an AI app called Marlit that detects floating marine litter in aerial photos. The system could help clean up the 8 million tons of plastic trash that enter our oceans every year, harming marine species, human health, tourism, and the climate. The litter is typically assessed by direct observations from boats and planes. But the vast ocean areas and volumes of data... Read more

But there’s something else that gained a ton of traffic after the TikTok ban: a picture of a flower on Wikimedia. This image picture received more than 75 million daily hits — almost 20% of Wikimedia’s requests for... Read more
