Hey America, stop buying hybrids: They’re BAD

Last week, with the help of Will Ferrell and GM, America threw down the gauntlet to electric vehicle lovers Norway, and vowed to “catch up.” It seems the US has already sorta kinda got the message, except it’s buying the wrong type of vehicle. According to figures from automotive market analyst Tyson Jominy at JD Power, the number of hybrid vehicles sold in the US is growing faster than the... Read more

How to stop yourself from using the wrong emoji at work

My editor Deb loves to ruin things. One time she used her Ph.D. in Italian to ruin an entire emoji. The emoji in question is a common Italian hand gesture that, roughly translated, means “what the hell?” This isn’t how our team was using it. At some point, we collectively decided to use this emoji to mean “perfection.” From what I can gather, people thought it represented kissing your fingertips,... Read more

Instagram won’t recommend Reels with a TikTok logo — and it’s unfair

In order to promote short videos created on its own platform, Instagram will stop recommending videos with logos of other apps, including TikTok. As noted by The Verge first, the company published a bunch of new guidelines for creators to get the best results possible on the platform. These tips, posted on Instagram’s creators account, suggested video-makers to use the vertical format, the app’s own sound library, and start a... Read more

Microsoft Word is testing an even darker dark mode

In case you didn’t know, Microsoft Word has a dark mode. The problem is, a huge portion of your screen — mainly the big ol’ page you’re writing on — remains white even after you’ve enabled the feature. For reference, this is what ‘dark’ mode currently looks like in Word: You’ve got a big chunk of white staring right at you. But as spotted by Paul Thurrott, Microsoft is currently... Read more

Spotify is finally testing live lyrics in the US

But fret no more, Americans with a penchant for impromptu karaoke: the service has begun testing the feature in the US with a limited number of users. A company spokesperson provided the following comment to Engadget when asked about the test: “We can confirm we’re... Read more

Beverly Hills cops try to weaponize Instagram’s algorithms in failed attempt to thwart live streamers

We don’t know if Beverly Hills Police Department (BHPD) Sergeant Billy Fair practices Santeria (or owns a crystal ball), but we know he listens to the Sublime song of the same name. We know this because he’s become a viral sensation on Instagram after blasting the 1990’s hit at a citizen in a misguided attempt to get Instagram’s algorithm to take down a live stream due to copyright infringement. Ironically,... Read more

Algorithm estimates COVID-19 infections in the US are three times higher than reported

An algorithm developed at the UT Southwestern medical center has estimated that there are almost three times as many COVID-19 infections in the US than the number of confirmed cases.   The model makes daily predictions of both total and current infections across the US and in the 50 countries worst affected by the virus. It calculated that more than 71 million people in the US had contracted COVID-19 by February... Read more

Microsoft says it’s developed ‘the most comprehensive spelling correction system ever made’

Microsoft has unveiled an AI system called Speller100 that corrects spelling in over 100 languages used in search queries on Bing. “We believe Speller100 is the most comprehensive spelling correction system ever made in terms of language coverage and accuracy,” the company said in a blog post. The 7 planets of the TRAPPIST-1 system are identical — here’s what we can learn from them

Just 40 light-years from Earth, the TRAPPIST-1 system of planets is home to the largest family of Earth-like worlds known to astronomers. At least seven planets are known to orbit within the TRAPPIST-1 solar system. A new study shows these worlds have nearly identical densities — within just a few percent of each other. You need to rethink your customer experience for 2021 — here’s how I did it

As the CEO of an SME business, 2020 wasn’t exactly smooth sailing. The pandemic left us feeling like we’d had the light switched off and were spun around until we were dizzy. It wasn’t easy, but it looks like we survived. We weren’t the only ones, and most of our peers obviously felt the same trauma.  As a B2B business, everybody found themselves in the same boat rocking back and... Read more

What would an all-electric Lamborghini look like? Pretty rad!

What comes into your mind when you hear the word: Lamborghini? Bright yellow cars? Raucous V12 engines? Italian flare? Perhaps that scene from The Wolf of Wall Stree, when DiCaprio attempts to drive a white Countach whilst high as a kite? Maybe it’s all those things and more, but one thing won’t be on your mind: electric power. In 2019 Lamborghini showed off a little glimpse into its future with... Read more
