We reviewed the Nintendo Switch OLED like it was a Pokémon card

The Nintendo Switch OLED has arrived! In case you missed the announcement, this is an updated version of the Japanese game giant’s record-breaking console. There is one issue though (and it’s something we explored in this comparison piece): on paper, the OLED model isn’t that different from the regular Switch. This is disappointing — especially for people excited about the potential of a Pro Switch. Don’t worry! All is not... Read more

Biology nerds have made proteins play Chopin-esque tunes

With the right computer program, proteins become pleasant music. There are many surprising analogies between proteins, the basic building blocks of life, and musical notation. These analogies can be used not only to help advance research but also to make the complexity of proteins accessible to the public. We’re computational biologists who believe that hearing the sound of life at the molecular level could help inspire people to learn more... Read more

Weirdly, rising electricity prices can actually help (?!) EV owners

Europe is facing an energy crisis thanks to low wind-power generation, broken connections that allow electricity to be shared across nations and shrinking nuclear energy sources. The UK has responded by burning more gas to produce electricity — but gas prices are at a record high. The result is that wholesale electricity costs are at their highest levels in years, and this is having a knock-on effect for anything that... Read more

Here are the best cities for Python developers

Recently, we’ve been doing a bit of research into the most in-demand programming languages, specifically focusing on Python, and it’s growing popularity among aspiring developers. There has been an increase in the demand for Python developers over the last few years, a trend that has gone nowhere in 2021 (and will no doubt stick around into 2022 and beyond). So, if you’ve done the work and learned the language, what... Read more

Google is automatically turning on 2FA — how to check your settings

If you think passwords provide enough security for your accounts, you’d be wrong. It’s important to protect your accounts with additional security measures like two-factor authentication (2FA), which allows you to use an app or a device for verification. Google already provides you an option to use hardware security keys, authenticator apps, prompts on your other devices with Google apps, and SMS-based verification codes as valid 2FA alternatives. While this... Read more

US Army funds ‘sleeping cap’ that could modulate brain health of soldiers

After experimenting with exoskeletons, performance-enhancing drugs, and AR goggles to develop super soldiers, the US military has taken a punt on a brain-modulating skullcap. The army has issued funding for a wearable device that analyzes how the brain disposes of waste during sleep. The system will be developed by researchers at Rice University, Houston Methodist Hospital, and Baylor College of Medicine. Ultimately, the team wants to create a headset that... Read more

It’s official: Google’s Pixel 6 event happens October 19

At long last, we now know when Google will reveal the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro: October 19. The company today sent invites to the press for its upcoming virtual event, which will be streamed to all at 10 AM Pacific Time. Well, “reveal” is a bit of a stretch. Google itself has already given us a solid look at the phone’s exterior design and announced its most notable... Read more

Brain implant relieves woman’s depression by zapping her with electricity

A woman with severe depression says her life has turned around after treatment with an experimental brain implant. The 36-year-old has been fitted with a system that’s been described as a “pacemaker for the brain.” Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco surgically implanted the matchbox-sized device in the patient’s skull more than a year ago. The system then began searching for neural signals of depression. Once these patterns... Read more

Forget about cars: Honda wants flying vehicles, avatar robots, and rockets

Well, to be fair Honda’s still making cars, only now it’s seriously expanding its business areas to form a “mobility ecosystem” that stretches into new dimensions — both literally and figuratively — and ultimately to outer space. Honda R&D Co., the company’s innovations arm, will be leading the efforts to produce an eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing) aircraft, an avatar robot, and space tech.  Honda’s eVTOL First up, Honda’s... Barcelona’s hidden smart city: How tech and history can live in harmony

Close your eyes and imagine a smart city (seriously, no peeking). Describe to me what you see: perhaps a cluster of glass skyscrapers? Endless streams of flashing neon lights? Shiny vehicles flying past? Well, if you did, you probably wouldn’t be the first. The truth, however, is cities don’t need to look like Blade Runner to be ‘smart.’ One of the greatest examples of this is the beautiful city of... Read more

EARBUD BATTLE ROYALE: OnePlus Buds Pro vs. Nothing Ear 1 vs. Google Pixel Buds A

I’m a fan of neck buds because I don’t need to put them in a case when I’m not using them, and that’s no secret. But wireless buds are getting more and more popular, and they have their perks, such as increased mobility and active noise cancellation. I got to use three popular buds in the sub-$150 range: the OnePlus Buds Pro, the Nothing Ear 1, and the Google Buds... Read more

Russia’s trying to control the internet, and Google and Apple are helping

On September 17, the first day of Russia’s parliamentary elections, Apple and Google agreed to demands from the Russian government to remove a strategic voting app developed by opposition leader Alexei Navalny from the iOS and Android app stores. Apple then disabled its Private Relay feature (which enhances web browsing privacy) for users in Russia. Google also removed YouTube videos giving advice on how to vote strategically in the elections.... Read more

We’ve all been there. Open Tinder, get bored, don’t look at the app for months. So to keep our profiles up to date and active, the app will offer in-app currencies as a reward. According to a report by Bloomberg, the Match Group-owned app is rolling this virtual currency initially in Australia, and later in other countries, including the US. The in-app “coins” could be earned by keeping your profile... Read more

Rogue Lords review: Cheaters always win

As a technology journalist I spend a lot of my time playing devil‘s advocate. When a game comes along that gives me the opportunity to take on the role of The Devil themselves, I consider it a rare privilege. Rogue Lords is a turn-based, rogue-like, procedural-generated, party building game that puts you in the shoes of the Devil. You’re tasked with reclaiming your evil glory and taking on none other... Codifying humanity: Can humor be reduced to an algorithm?

Welcome to “Codifying Humanity.” A new Neural series that analyzes the machine learning world’s attempts at creating human-level AI.  Stop me if you’ve heard this one. A robot walks into a bar and the bartender takes its order. The robot says: “I’ll have whatever my developer likes.” If you’re not laughing right now it’s because the joke isn’t funny. And if you are laughing, it’s because the joke is funny.... Read more
