The menacing interior of a massive hurricane has been filmed by an ocean drone for the first time. The vehicle, called Saildrone Explorer SD 1045, was directed into the tropical cyclone to record conditions at the water’s surface. The strangely soothing footage belies the ferocity of the... We interviewed Siri about what it’s like to turn 10

Ten is a weird birthday. It feels important — you’ve been alive a whole decade, after all — but it doesn’t actually mean anything. Puberty is still away in the spotty distance. Driving is nowhere close. And you can’t even buy a lottery ticket, let alone put a grand on a weirdly named animal (MOTHER’S MILK! GENGHIS FROWN!) down at the dog track. Yes, ten years might be arbitrary, but... Read more ›

Google is monopolizing online ads in Australia — and that’s bad

And perhaps the biggest player in the online advertising space is Google. Australia’s competition watchdog, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), says Google now dominates the country’s online advertising so thoroughly it must b Read more ›

Thought you loved Python? Wait until you meet Rust

“Technology from the past comes to save the future from itself.” That’s how Graydon Hoare, the creator of Rust, describes what he wants to achieve. That’s one of the key hallmarks of Rust: using technologies that are well-known to academia but rarely implemented in contemporary programming languages. Technologies that are old, reliable, and sometimes forgotten. But which, above all, work extremely well. These technologies are used mainly for one thing:... Read more ›

4 video meeting rules we should keep following in the office

2020 changed work — possibly forever. Millions of people started working remotely for the first time, and they learned it’s not quite the same as working in an office. But as people start transitioning back into the office, I... Read more ›
