Buy these Mercedes headphones to show everyone how poor (and ugly) they are

There’s a simple problem with driving an expensive car: you’re not always in it. Sometimes, there will be moments, awful, heart-wrenching moments where everyone in your vicinity won’t know that you own a vehicle that, objectively, makes you better than everyone else. But, friend, dry your leaking eyes moistening face. Because Mercedes-Benz has teamed up with Master & Dynamic to make several pairs of headphones that will finally to let... Read more

The tech community has the power to drive change — it’s time to use it for good

As a communications professional with more than 20 years in the industry, I can say with certainty that one of the most refreshing and hopeful changes I have seen in the past few years is the increasing authenticity and focus on social activism from tech organizations big and small. It’s one of the reasons why I was excited to see impact at the forefront of TNW Conference 2022, bringing together... Read more

GLAAD evaluated the companies using 12 LGBTQ-specific indicators of online safety in regard to privacy, freedom of expression, and explicit protections. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and TikTok, all scored poorly on the group’s scorecard — less than 50% out... Read more

UK’s ‘plug-in-grant’ is no more — what happened to making EVs affordable for everyone?

Since 2011, the UK government has been providing a tax-payer funded discount on the sale of battery electric vehicles. Known as the “plug-in car grant”, it was designed to help persuade motorists make the switch from diesel or petrol and commit to electric driving. But last month the grant was scrapped with immediate effect. It wasn’t exactly a surprise, given that the amount buyers were able to claim back had... Read more

Decades of gender initiatives have failed — most women still don’t want to be leaders

The gender gap in pay, positions, and even pensions for working women is well-established, but research shows that a gender aspiration gap has also emerged in recent years. This is when women do not aspire to rise through the ranks in the same way as men do, and it could affect efforts to encourage more women to apply for leadership roles at work. The global drive to increase social equality... Read more

The Nigerian Prince has evolved: email scams now even fool cybersecurity experts

We all like to think we’re immune to scams. We scoff at emails from an unknown sender offering us £2 million, in exchange for our bank details. But the game has changed and con artists have developed new, chilling tactics. They are taking the personal approach and scouring the internet for all the details they can find about us. Scammers are getting so good at it that even cybersecurity experts... Read more

Submitting junk data to period tracking apps won’t protect reproductive privacy

Social media users posted ideas about how to protect people’s reproductive privacy when the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, including entering “junk” data into apps designed for tracking menstrual cycles. People use period tracking apps to predict their next period, talk to their doctor about their cycle and identify when they are fertile. Users log everything from cravings to period flow, and apps provide predictions based on these inputs.... Read more

We haven’t found alien life yet — but the James Webb Space Telescope could change that

The ingredients for life are spread throughout the universe. While Earth is the only known place in the universe with life, detecting life beyond Earth is a major goal of modern astronomy and planetary science. We are two scientists who study exoplanets and astrobiology. Thanks in large part to next-generation telescopes like James Webb, researchers like us will soon be able to measure the chemical makeup of atmospheres of planets... Read more

MIT’s building a time-traveling dark matter detector that could save Einstein’s legacy

A team of physicists at MIT recently published a mind-blowing research paper detailing their successful efforts to use entanglement and ‘quantum time-reversal’ to create sensors capable of incredibly deep measurements. That sounds like a lot of science jargon, but the gist is that this could potentially lead to a legitimate ‘dark matter detector,’ and that’s something that could revolutionize humanity’s understanding of literally everything. Up front: Physics is a moving... Read more

Black and Native American pedestrians are killed at higher rates — here’s why

A new report finds that North American streets are getting deadlier for pedestrians. Research by Smart Growth America and the National Complete Streets Coalition reveals that, in 2020, over 6,500 people were struck and killed by cars while walking.  That averages out to 18 people a day — and a deadly 4.5% increase from 2019. To make matters worse, the burden is not shared equally among pedestrians.  Black and Native-American... Read more

Researcher discovered new app malware on Google Play that steals your money

Maxime Ingrao, security researcher at cybersecurity company Evina, has discovered a new malware family that can infect Android apps on Google Play. It’s named Autolycos — from the homonymous Greek mythological figure, known for his mastery in thievery and deceit. And that’s exactly what the malware does. Since June 2021, Ingrao has identified eight infected apps on Play Store — downloaded over three million times. Found new family of malware... Read more

Musk’s Twitter beef with Twitter and 3 other tweets that got Elon in trouble

Elon Musk’s itchy Twitter fingers have got him in trouble again. The latest backlash to the billionaire’s tweets has come from Twitter itself. After Musk revealed plans to terminate his $44 billion bid for the company, the social media platform sued the tycoon. The lawsuit accuses Musk of breaching the terms of the deal — and uses his tweets as evidence. The filing features no fewer than 13 tweets from... Read more

Scathing study exposes Google’s harmful approach to AI development

A study published earlier this week by Surge AI appears to lay bare one of the biggest problems plaguing the AI industry: bullshit, exploitative data-labeling practices. Last year, Google built a dataset called “GoEmotions.” It was billed as a “fine-grained emotion dataset” — basically a ready-to-train-on dataset for building AI that can recognize emotional sentiment in text. Per a Google blog post: In “GoEmotions: A Dataset of Fine-Grained Emotions”, we... Read more

Researchers trained this AI to ‘think’ like a baby — here’s what happened

In a world rife with opposing views, let’s draw attention to something we can all agree on: if I show you my pen, and then hide it behind my back, my pen still exists – even though you can’t see it anymore. We can all agree it still exists, and probably has the same shape and color it did before it went behind my back. This is just common sense.... Read more

The Uber files reveal a strategy of chaos and law-breaking — and more troubles lie ahead

Uber has had a controversial history since its founding in 2009, from violent conflicts among drivers to a secret software allegedly used to evade law enforcement. Now, a leak of over 124,000 documents dubbed the Uber files shows the extent to which the firm under co-founder and former CEO Travis Kalanick capitalized on that chaos to expand across 40 countries. My research explores the relationship between Uber and the state.... Read more

Research: EVs are the greenest cars but their supply chains are damn dirty

This week, a new report prepared for the UK Department for Transport found that electric vehicles are greener across their lifecycle than their gas-fueled internal combustion engine (ICE) counterparts.  Specifically, lifecycle modeling analysis found that a typical battery electric car is estimated to save up to 65% more greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions than a conventional petrol car.  But is the research a win for electric vehicle manufacturing or a starting...
