Cady Heron (Angourie Rice) with Damien (Jaquel Spivey) and Janis (Auli’i Cravalho). | ParamountThe Color Purple and Mean Girls make the trip from the silver screen to the stage and back. For a long while, it seemed as though the Broadway-to-Hollywood pipeline, with a few exceptions, flowed one way. A musical would debut on the stage and then eventually make its way to film. It’s what happened with the Rodgers and Hammerstein classics of the mid-century like Carousel and South Pacific and eventually Best Pic

Read more

The square-ish phone that I wanted to love

The Ikko MindOne Pro is delightfully small. I keep calling it a square phone, which isn't quite right; the screen is square, but the phone itself is slightly rectangular. The camera flips up so you can use it for selfies - you can even open it partway to use as a stand or a kind […] Read more

Four easy ways to live longer

My grandmother lived to be 97. For decades she was active in her church, had long friendships with her sorority sisters, and she even got to see all six of her grandchildren go off to college. By the time she passed, she’d done just about everything she wanted to do. With those genes, I feel […] Read more

The US is better off than it was in 1976. So why does it feel worse?

America in the summer of 1976 was not in a good place.  The president who presided over the country’s Bicentennial, President Gerald Ford, only had the job because the previous president and vice president had resigned in disgrace, making him the sole US president who was never actually elected. The Vietnam War had ended in […] Read more

The manly appeal of Zohran Mamdani

After two successive women lost the race for president — and with the GOP increasingly claiming the testosterone-fueled “manosphere” — a lot of Democratic insiders are starting to worry the party is a bit too low-T. A fringe attack on voting rights just got four votes on the Supreme Court

The premise of the Republican Party’s lawsuit in Watson v. How the rich got stingy

Historically, being ultra-wealthy meant that there was an obligation to share a chunk of it with the world. Gilded Age industrialists like John D.
