UK pumps cold cash into green freight with new £7M tech fund

On Monday, the UK government launched a £7M tech fund aiming to decarbonize the freight industry and improve transport links. Over the course of three years, the Freight Innovation Fund (FIF) will go to up to 36 SMEs to develop innovative technologies that can make industrial transport more “efficient,” “resilient,” and “greener.” “Each year in the UK, we transport 1.6 billion tonnes of freight using many different modes of transport, and it has never been quicker or easier,” Nicola Yates OBE, CEO at Connec

I’m 44 and I realized last Sunday that the reason I keep my phone face-down on the counter isn’t a habit, it’s that twenty years of being on-call for everyone trained my body to treat a screen-up phone as a job I haven’t clocked out of

The face-down phone isn't a habit, it's a body trying to enforce a boundary against a workplace that has no walls. What twenty years of being on-call actually trained into me, and why the gesture matters more than the rule. Read more

The person who remembers your coffee order, your sister’s name, and the exact week you mentioned a doctor’s appointment isn’t always just warm, they may have learned early that missing a detail looked like not caring

Detail-tracking often gets read as warmth, but for many adults it's the residue of a childhood where missing a small thing was treated as not caring. The mechanism is vigilance, not affection — and the difference matters. Read more

Read more

Read more

Psychology says the generation that grew up in the 1960s and 70s didn’t become tough because they wanted to — they became tough because the world handed them consequences with no safety net and no explanation, and by the time they were twelve they had already learned that nobody was coming to save them, and that lesson cemented itself so deep into their nervous system that they still can’t ask for help sixty years later

Read more

A colossal underwater volcano in the South Pacific may have revealed a surprising new weapon against climate change. After the 2022 eruption of Hunga Tonga–Hunga Ha’apai, scientists detected enormous amounts of formaldehyde in the atmosphere — a telltale sign that methane, one of the planet’s most powerful greenhouse gases, was being destroyed. Researchers now believe volcanic ash mixed with salty seawater and sunlight created reactive chlorine particles that effectively “cleaned... Read more

Scientists have uncovered strong evidence that a major Atlantic Ocean current system tied to global climate is weakening. The slowdown has been detected across a vast region of the North Atlantic over nearly two decades. Since this ocean circulation helps regulate weather and temperatures, changes could affect storms, rainfall, sea levels, and even winter conditions in parts of Europe and North America. Read more

Scientists have uncovered a hidden Antarctic threat that could accelerate global sea level rise far faster than expected. Deep beneath floating ice shelves, long channels carved into the ice appear to trap warmer ocean water, dramatically speeding up melting from below. Even regions of East Antarctica once considered relatively stable may be far more vulnerable than scientists realized. Researchers warn that current climate models may be missing this dangerous process... Read more
