Anthropic and OpenAI, which have struck multibillion-dollar investment and infrastructure deals with Amazon, have already committed to renting large amounts of current and future Trainium capacity. Now, recent software improvements are prompting smaller developers to consider moving more workloads to Trainium, half a dozen people who use or work with the chips said.

Some developers have told me that the rising costs of frontier AI models from Anthropic and other firms could prompt them to shift to cheaper open-source AI. After all, when companies as sophisticated as Uber are accidentally blowing through their entire year’s AI budget in a matter of months, it makes sense to cut back by using a less capable open-source model to automate simpler tasks. (In fact, companies like... Read more ›

Perhaps the only thing outpacing AI spending is the volume of commentary dedicated to the technology’s disruption. And while business leaders aren’t lacking for insights, they are discovering that AI is evolving faster than any coherent playbook can keep up with. The result is that companies are making high-stakes decisions without clear returns, stable organizational structures or even agreement over who’s in charge. In a conversation with Ken Brown, The...
