810 Plant believed extinct for 60 years suddenly reappears

ScienceDaily
ScienceDaily · 05/18/2026 04:51 EDT

A random photo snapped in the Australian outback has led to the rediscovery of a plant thought extinct for nearly 60 years — proving that ordinary people with smartphones are quietly transforming science. After bird bander Aaron Bean uploaded pictures of a strange shrub to iNaturalist, botanist Anthony Bean immediately recognized it as Ptilotus senarius, a rare species missing since 1967.

CI/CD для продакшна: GitLab Registry, Docker in Docker и отказоустойчивость

Read more

Google signs $920M monthly compute deal with SpaceX — company’s projected annual data center revenue to exceed its combined proceeds from Starlink, launch services, and AI in 2025

Google's $920-million-a-month deal with SpaceX will let it secure 110,000 Nvidia GPUs starting October 2026. This is the second data center deal that SpaceX has secured in a matter of weeks, especially as it's quickly approaching its IPO on June 12, 2026. Read more

NoiR Code: QR-

Read more

Read more

Read more

Researchers have developed a compact quantum detector that makes terahertz radiation much easier to detect. A specially designed metasurface funnels incoming energy into tiny active regions, greatly strengthening the electrical signal produced. The approach boosted efficiency by roughly 20 times compared to earlier designs and could pave the way for more practical THz devices in healthcare, communications, and scientific research. Scientists have developed a solar desalination system that turns seawater into drinking water without creating environmentally damaging brine. Special laser-textured metal panels use sunlight to evaporate water while automatically moving salt deposits away from the working surface, preventing clogging. The process was successfully tested with water from three oceans and can recover nearly all salts as solids. Those leftover materials could even become a source of valuable lithium for batteries. Great apes appear to build friendships much like humans do. By studying grooming behavior, researchers discovered that chimpanzees and bonobos form close inner circles along with wider networks of weaker social connections. Melanoma may not become steadily more dangerous with age as scientists once assumed. In a surprising discovery, researchers found that cancer spread was lowest in young mice, surged in middle-aged mice, and then dropped again in very old mice. The key appears to be a special type of immune cell that helps keep cancer dormant and prevents it from spreading. Read more
