Researchers found that triple-negative breast cancer cells are “addicted” to lipids, a feature tied to obesity. By studying mice, they discovered that high lipid levels alone accelerate tumor growth. Lowering these fats slowed cancer progression, suggesting that lipid-lowering treatments could help. The findings also caution against high-fat diets such as keto for patients with obesity. Both regular and “diet” soft drinks may be far worse for liver health than believed. A massive study of over 120,000 participants found that consuming more than one can a day of either sugar-sweetened or low/no-sugar beverages sharply increased the risk of metabolic-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and even liver-related deaths. New Data Shows Record CO2 Levels in 2024. Are Carbon Sinks Failing?

The Guardian reports that atmospheric carbon dioxide "soared by a record amount in 2024 to hit another high, UN data shows." But what's more troubling is why: Several factors contributed to the leap in CO2, including another year of unrelenting fossil fuel burning despite a pledge by the world's countries in 2023 to "transition away" from coal, oil and gas. Another factor was an upsurge in wildfires in conditions made... Read more

5 reasons even conservatives should oppose Trump’s immigration policy

When liberals denounce Donald Trump’s authoritarianism, they often cast his immigration agenda as a case in point. Back in June, Democrats on the House Oversight Committee decried the president’s “mass deportation operations” as the “stepping stone” to his “radical attempts to seize absolute power.” In the same statement, they condemned the administration’s deportation of noncriminal […] Read more

Peace in Gaza won’t last if Netanyahu stays in office

If the current ceasefire in Gaza holds, it will mark the much-needed end to an indefensibly cruel war.
