Deals: Xiaomi 15 and 15 Ultra prices fall to new low, plus some more affordable offers

The pricing of Xiaomi’s 15-series has reached a new low, offering a choice between a relatively compact flagship and an all-out camera phone. We know that many don’t consider the Xiaomi 15 to be “small” with its 6.36” display and 71.2mm width. Still, it’s one of the smaller Snapdragon 8 Elite flagships and, unlike say a Galaxy S25, it has triple 50MP cameras on the back. This includes a main... Read more

Trump’s military parade is a warning

Donald Trump’s military parade in Washington this weekend — a show of force in the capital that just happens to take place on the president’s birthday — smacks of authoritarian Dear Leader-style politics (even though Trump actually got the idea after attending the 2017 Bastille Day parade in Paris). Yet as disconcerting as the imagery […] Read more

'Ghost' Students are Enrolling in US Colleges Just to Steal Financial Aid

Here's a lesson for today's colleges from the Associated Press. Online classes + AI = financial aid fraud. "In some cases, professors discover almost no one in their class is real..." Students get locked out of the classes they need to... Read more

Python Creator Guido van Rossum Asks: Is 'Worse is Better' Still True for Programming Languages?

In 1989 a computer scientist argued that more functionality in software actually lowers usability and practicality — leading to the counterintuitive proposition that "worse is better". But is that still true? Python's original creator Guido van Rossum addressed the question last month in a lightning talk at the annual Python Language Summit 2025. Guido started by recounting earlier periods of Python development from 35 years ago, where he used UNIX... Read more

Of all the jarring things I've witnessed on the National Mall, nothing will beat the image of the first thing I saw after I cleared security at the Army festival: a child, sitting at the controls of an M119A3 Howitzer, being instructed by a soldier on how to aim it, as his red-hatted parents took […] Read more

Neat defer macro for C++17

Manual resource management in low level C-style C++ code might be annoying. It's not practical to create good enough RAII wrappers for every single C API you use, but approaches with goto cleanup or loads of nested if (success) hurt readability.A defer macro to the rescue! The deferred lambda will be executed on scope exit, no matter how it happens: you can return from any point, throw an exception (if... Read more

SQL Server vs. PostgreSQL query optimization: room for improvement?

For years, we’ve studied Oracle to make PostgreSQL a more migration-friendly option. We introduced tools similar to SQL profile and SQL plan baseline as AQO and sr_plan extensions. In some cases, PostgreSQL even outperforms Oracle, especially in automatic re-optimization.Migrations from Oracle to PostgreSQL are usually smooth performance-wise, and we’ve even developed session variable extensions to make the transition easier. While many enterprise-only features exist, PostgreSQL often integrates popular sol Read more
