For over six decades, the “religious right” in America was boomer “Christian nationalism,” straight out of The Handmaid’s Tale. It was about “keeping God in the schools” and the National Prayer Breakfast. It was traditionalist, mindful of theology, and, well, theocratic, which is to say it wanted to take the standards of a religious tradition […] Read more

US Navy Backs Right To Repair After $13 Billion Carrier Crew Left Half-Fed By Contractor-Locked Ovens

An anonymous reader quotes a report from The Register: US Navy Secretary John Phelan has told the Senate the service needs the right to repair its own gear, and will rethink how it writes contracts to keep control of intellectual property and ensure sailors can fix hardware, especially in a fight. I live and work in the San Francisco Bay Area, and I don’t know anyone who says they voted for Donald Trump in 2016 or 2020. I know, on the other hand, quite a few who voted for him in 2024, and quite a few more who — while they didn’t vote for Trump because […] Read more

Ending the Xbox Summer Game Fest Showcase with COD: Black Ops 7 was a terrible decision, even though it no doubt made perfect sense

Xbox had a really good showing on Sunday, its showcase at the tail end of a Summer Game Fest period that has at times felt rather glib managing to make people feel happy about video games again - at least for a little bit. It was full of the kind of quirky and interesting-looking games that in years past would have been reserved for PlayStation's E3 showcase, with only a... Read more
