I'm tired of pretending that Perfect Dark Zero isn't at least 50% really, really good

Time can be cruel. I'm not talking about the ravages of age when I say that - although, christ, the closer I creep to forty the creakier I become - but I'm thinking, I suppose, about legacy. The very nature of history, especially when it's oral in its delivery, is that it becomes truncated. Short-form takes over. For instance - think of a Prime Minister or President (back when we... Xbox really committed to Japanese game development in the 360 era, and we didn't know how good we had it

The Xbox business today is pretty unrecognizable from that of 20 years past, which on this week all that time ago was launching the Xbox 360. There's all the changes to the business, a different suite of executives at the top, and an entirely different first-party portfolio, of course - but when I think of the changes, one absence comes to the forefront of my mind: Japan. Looking back at the worst game ever released on the Xbox Live Arcade

Did you know that the Xbox Live Arcade actually started as a disc based distribution service on the original Xbox? Chances are you didn't (though I eagerly await the one person in the comments who stands to correct me), because Microsoft's mini marketplace only gained widespread popularity once it relaunched alongside the release of the Xbox 360. As someone who bought a 360 close to launch, when there weren't a... Read more ›

A building filled with dreamers: my favourite thing about the Xbox 360

When I look back on most consoles, I'm largely looking back at the games. The PS3 is LittleBigPlanet and Metal Gear 4, as far as I'm concerned, and even the GameCube, that squat, characterful delight, is largely hidden behind Mario Sunshine, Wind-Waker and Animal Crossing. (Even just typing that: cor, what a time that was.) Read more Read more ›

What we've been playing - "I can't stop thinking about balls"

Hello and welcome back to our regular feature where we write a little bit about some of the games we've been playing. This week, Kelsey discovers the joys and stresses of managing border control in Papers, Please; Tom holds off his Kojima dislike and plays Death Stranding; Victoria looks for anyone she can to talk to about Dispatch; Ed can't stop thinking about balls; Connor finds himself back in Guild... Any future Hollow Knight games after Silksong would "exist alongside" the others as standalone entries, says Team Cherry

Team Cherry has teased more Hollow Knight releases beyond Silksong, which (if they ever do materialise) would sit alongside the studio's previous games, rather than act as any kind of continuation that would require an understanding of earlier lore to appreciate. Read more Read more ›

Tools of the trade: this rollable OLED screen Lenovo laptop is making Black Friday deals a breeze

Every so often, it seems fun and interesting to give you a peek behind the curtain so you can see how we do our jobs and the tools we use that can make life easier. Will has spoken in the past about how useful a 'triple-screen laptop' has been to help him cover Prime Day sales, which became a boon for having multiple screens in a decently portable form factor.... Liam Hemsworth "holds up pretty well" in The Witcher season four, says Geralt video game actor Doug Cockle

Actor Doug Cockle, who is known to many as the gravelly voiced Geralt of Rivia in CD Projekt Red's The Witcher games, has again said he was "sad" to see Henry Cavill step away from the same role in Netflix's series. However, he believes Liam Hemsworth "holds up pretty well" in the show's fourth season. Read more Read more ›

Renowned indie studio Inkle announces something quite different: a found-footage World War 2 code-breaking mystery

Renowned British indie studio Inkle - the creator of Heaven's Vault, the Steve Jackson's Sorcery! series, Highland Song, and many other glistening treasures - has just announced a new game. It's called TR-49 and it's part audio-book, part narrative deduction, based around a found-footage idea of cracking codes from a series of previously undiscovered and secret World War 2-era books. The 10 Xbox 360 games that mattered the most

At the tail end of 2024 the original PlayStation turned 30 years old. While the Xbox 360 is only hitting 20 and it's not an industry shaker to the degree the PS1 was, there's no doubt it earned its place as one of the most important consoles of all time. Xbox managed to challenge Sony in the traditional home console space the PlayStation had dominated with PS1 and PS2, and... Read more ›

Five years later, Ubisoft's much-delayed Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake gets the closest thing to a release date yet

It's hard to believe it's been over five years since Ubisoft unveiled its troubled - and much-delayed - Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake, but we're now one step closer to an actual release date, with Ubisoft's latest financial results narrowing its launch down to "Q4" of its current financial year. After five hours, I can confirm that the Nioh 3 alpha was not a good representation of the game: the full thing is far better

I think Nioh 2 is a near-perfect game. Team Ninja, inspired by but never beholden to the Souls-like formula, has created a viable alternative to FromSoft's games with the Nioh series. Stance-based combat adds a fighting game twist, and the tight level design, commitment to historical Japanese settings, and more traditional storytelling methods allow the series to stand out from all the other contenders to the genre throne. If FromSoft... Read more ›
