Hello Neighbour publisher outlines troubling future of employee monitoring in AI keynote

Alex Nichiporchik, CEO of Hello neighbour publisher TinyBuild, has raised eyebrows during a keynote outlining potential uses of AI tools in the workplace, including the monitoring of employee Slack messages and meeting transcriptions to help identify "potential problematic players" - a discussion he has since insisted was "hypothetical". Nichiporchik (as reported by WhyNowGaming) was speaking at this week's Develop: Brighton conference, in talk titled 'AI in Gamedev: Is My Job... Read more ›

Atari's arcade classic Lunar Lander being reimagined with "deep narrative" for 2024

Atari's 1979 arcade classic Lunar Lander is being reimagined by Dreams Uncorporated, the studio behind last year's striking Cris Tales, for release in early 2024. The original Lunar Lander (perhaps the most famous entry in a sub-genre that can be traced back as far as 1969) was exquisite in its compelling simplicity, requiring players to do nothing more than carefully park their lunar landing module at a fixed point on... Forspoken revisited on PS5: does the final update fix the game's technical issues?

Forspoken was one of the most promising early PS5 showings, revealed with death-defying parkour, wide-open landscapes and beautiful visuals throughout. At launch, the game was far less impressive though - a repetitive, empty game with surprisingly dated graphics despite its high budget. A dedicated patching campaign seems to have improved the title's plight, with reported visual and performance improvements in tow as of version 1.2. Have recent patches turned Forspoken... Annapurna-published puzzler Lorelei and the Laser Eyes features a broken world and a big secret

Simogo's Lorelei and the Laser Eyes is a game about "unravelling a big secret". A new trailer for the game was shown at the recent Annapurna Showcase, but with its abstract aesthetic it's difficult to ascertain exactly how the game will play. That was intentional, however. "We aim to try to raise questions, instead of answering them," said game director Simon Flesser. "We want to make viewers wonder, and think."... Read more ›

EA Sports responds to FC 24 cover art criticism

FC 24, the first game from EA Sports since it left the big FIFA licence behind, got off to a slightly awkward start with its first big reveal earlier this week, when its Ultimate Edition cover art took a bit of a ribbing from fans. There were a few questionable faces in there, admittedly, with Brazilian Womens' legend Miranda looking quietly terrifying up in the top left, and Ronaldino not... Read more ›

Game of the Week: Wandering through the night in Oxenfree 2

Noctivagant is a word worth knowing. According to Penguin's beloved Dictionary of Curious and Interesting Words, it means "night-wandering", and there are quotes from T.C. Boyle and John Gardner to illustrate it. (We're also asked to compare with "divagate," which I'm delighted to discover means "to wander about, to take a side trip." Apologies for this divagation.) Anyway, noctivagant: it rules. I try to get it in print around once... Read more ›

Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart doesn't need an SSD on PC

Insomniac has released Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart's PC specifications. Turns out, an SSD isn't actually needed. Ahead of the game's release on PlayStation 5, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart was touted as a showcase for the capabilities of Sony's new console, and in particular the fast loading of its SSD. Indeed, creative director Marcus Smith stated in an official PlayStation video that the game's dimensional rift hopping "would not... Read more ›

UK extends deadline for final decision on Microsoft's Activision Blizzard deal

The UK's Competition and Markets Authority has extended its deadline for a final decision on Microsoft's Activision Blizzard takeover bid. The regulator was expected to formally block the deal - as previously announced - on 18th July, but Microsoft has since submitted a "detailed and complex" proposal with changes in circumstances (thanks, GamesIndustry.biz). As such, the CMA will take another six weeks to consider the new submission, with this revised... Read more ›

FTC appeal denied, as Microsoft's Activision acquisition nears completion

The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has seen its initial appeal against this week's Microsoft and Activision Blizzard ruling promptly denied. US District Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley, who presided over the main case, rejected the FTC's call for an appeal late last night. With this avenue now closed, the FTC has subsequently launched a new push for a "temporary pause" on Microsoft's $68.7bn Activision Blizzard acquisition, Reuters has reported, this... Read more ›

Larian on signing Baldur's Gate 3, approaching a new era, and games you've never heard about

I saw sides to Baldur's Gate 3 last week - at an event for the launch version of the game (due 3rd August on PC) - I didn't realise were there. I saw the game transform into a horror not far removed from Silent Hill, in an eerie Victorian-style hospital where nurses with rotten faces cooed around a grotesque surgeon who had scalpels for fingers and torture on his mind.... Henry Cavill's The Witcher exit draws nearer with new Season 3 Vol. 2 trailer

It is, alas, almost time to bid a fond farewell to Henry Cavill's stoically sweary take on Geralt of Rivia in Netflix's The Witcher adaptation. He'll be hanging up his sword and locks of white in the upcoming Season 3 Volume 2, which Netlix is now teasing in a newly released trailer. Season 3 of Netflix's wonky The Witcher adaptation kicked off with five new episodes at the end of... Read more ›
