Netflix quietly releases iOS controller app so you can play its games on a TV

Substantiating a Bloomberg report from earlier this year, Netflix has quietly released a new "game controller" app for iOS intended to make it possible for subscribers to play its games on their TV. The major wrinkle in all this, however, is that it currently doesn't actually do anything. As spotted by TechCrunch, the Netflix Game Controller app (as it's official known) slipped onto the iOS App Store with zero fanfare,... Read more ›

Somehow, Baldur's Gate 3 was completed by 368 players in its opening weekend

Larian has released some Baldur's Gate 3 stats to celebrate its first week of release and some of them are remarkable. In particular, 368 players managed to complete the game in the opening weekend. How? I have no idea - this game is incredibly long and in-depth. It all begins with character creation, of course, which is what most of these stats consider. Read more Read more ›

High on Life comes to PS5 - with performance and animation issues that need addressing

High on Life is an an offbeat first-person shooter, with Halo-style combat mechanics, acrobatic platforming, and acerbic humour voiced by major American comedians. It stands out in a world of games that take themselves all too seriously, making for a compelling experience when it launched last year on Xbox consoles and PC. After eight months of Microsoft exclusivity, the game's finally come to PS4 and PS5, bringing along major game... Read more ›

10 Baldur's Gate 3 mods to make or break combat

It's been a week since Baldur's Gate 3 released in full on PC and already there are a whole host of mods available, aimed at both aiding combat and character development - or potentially breaking the game. As a newbie to both Baldur's Gate 3 and D&D, I've found the game a little impenetrable so far (but still enjoyable!) and combat is certainly tricky. So, I won't lie, I've been... Read more ›

F1 Manager 2023 - challenging racing sim that scores some points

I'm a lifelong Ferrari fan, but I'm firmly in the "anyone but Red Bull" camp this year. With Max Verstappen sweeping almost every Formula 1 race, his lead feels unassailable, and I'm desperately hoping for a post-summer break shake-up. F1 Manager 2023 imagines a more competitive season, rewriting history without directly driving, unlike F1 23. This isn't the upgrade I hoped for over its predecessor, but Frontier's annual management sim... Read more ›

Game of the Week: Turbo Overkill and the joys of video game excess

One thing I remember about lockdown is this weird thing that happened when lockdown ended. After days and weeks and months of being indoors - home schooling, masked chats to the Tesco delivery people and endless Netflix binges of Below Deck - just stepping outside was this wild kind of sensory overload. And I mean any kind of stepping outside. Taking the bins out without putting on shoes: so many... Read more ›

Baldur's Gate 3 narrator's outtakes are gloriously unhinged

Baldur's Gate 3 features some fantastic companion characters, all wonderfully voiced throughout the game. It really adds to its immersion. But perhaps the most underrated character is the narrator, acting as the DM and narrating the story with typical second-person phrasing. Far from a blank narration, there's plenty of personality in the delivery. That's thanks to voice actor Amelia Tyler, who's been sharing hilarious outtakes over on her YouTube channel.... Roblox to begin holding job interviews within Roblox

What better way to find out if a prospective candidate has knowledge of your game than to launch a job interview process within the game itself? Metaverse-y game hub Roblox has now done just this, and launched a virtual company career centre where keen applicants can turn up for event, podcasts and conversations with existing employees. For now, the experience is designed for candidates in junior roles, with the idea... Read more ›

The upcoming Lollipop Chainsaw remake has been delayed from 2023 to the summer of 2024. Larian boss suggests ignoring Baldur's Gate 3 companions in multiplayer

Larian boss Swen Vincke has suggested Baldur's Gate 3 players ignore the game's companions when playing multiplayer. The hit RPG is playable in four-player co-op, which fills out the party and leaves no room for companions like Lae'zel, Astarion, and Gale and means players could miss out on their unique stories. Vincke, however, has suggested not interacting with companions and saving them instead for solo play. Read more Read more ›

What we've been playing

Hello! Welcome back to our regular feature where we write a little bit about some of the games we've found ourselves playing over the last few days. This time: growing boredom, connections, and a good treasure map.If you fancy catching up on some of the older editions of What We've Been Playing, here's our archive.I have a lot of conflicting thoughts about Diablo 4, and a lot of it is... Darkwood dev announces "5-10 years" hiatus just months after revealing new game

Acid Wizard Studios - the developer behind 2017's stupendous top-down survival horror Darkwood - has announced an indefinite, years-long hiatus, just months after unveiling its first new game in half a decade, Soccer Kids. Darkwood initially released into Steam early access back in 2014, quickly becoming a horror favourite with its strange, oppressive atmosphere and strikingly effective presentation, but following its full release in 2017 and a period of patching,... Turbo Overkill - the new cyber-god of retro shooters

I'd say that Turbo Overkill is the best boomer shooter I've played, but I'm still figuring out whether it counts as a boomer shooter at all. Like its cyborg protagonist, much of Turbo Overkill's core DNA has been augmented with newer, shinier design ideas. It borrows as much from games like Doom Eternal and Titanfall 2 as it does from the classics of the nineties. It has upgradable weapons, character... Read more ›
