Mortal Kombat 1's pre-order beta gets an extension this weekend

If you've been enjoying the Mortal Kombat 1 pre-order beta, I have good news: NetherRealm is extending the beta test until 11pm UK time (3pm PT) Monday 21st August, 2023. Whilst it had initially been set to end at 4pm UK / 8am PDT, Mortal Kombat's co-creator and NetherRealm CCO, Ed Boon, confirmed on X/Twitter earlier today that the test has been extended by an additional seven hours. Who really told Link it's dangerous to go alone?

I've always loved the idea of video game lore, but I've always struggled with the real stuff of keeping track of it and making sense of it all. Partly it's because I have a terrible memory, particularly for names, places, events and dates, so I was always going to have difficulty with following the deep history of Assassin's Creed or the Elder Scrolls. The other reason, though, is because I... Read more ›

No Man's Sky celebrates seventh birthday with (very) tiny tease for next update

Somewhat unbelievably, No Man's Sky is now seven years old, and developer Hello Games is celebrating the exploratory space sim's latest milestone with a brisk video retrospective and, probably of far more interest to fans, the tiniest of teases for the game's next update. Really, it's just the name they've announced, so don't get your hopes up. No Man's Sky technically celebrated its seventh birthday last Wednesday, on 9th August,... Read more ›

Intel delivers a new DX11 driver for Arc GPUs - and a potentially game-changing benchmarking tool

We recently spoke to Intel's Tom 'TAP' Petersen about updates to its DirectX 11 driver for Arc graphics cards and a new, entirely rebuilt version of its PresentMon tool for monitoring system performance. In short, these Arc GPUs continue to improve as Intel shore up support for older graphics APIs, with up to a 19 percentage point increase in average frame-rate in a selection of DX11 games with the release... Frog Detective's endearingly silly sleuthing coming to consoles in three-game Entire Mystery collection

Frog Detective, developer Worm Club's trilogy of endearingly daft sleuthing adventures, is making the leap to consoles - specifically PlayStation, Switch, Xbox (including Game Pass) - later this year, in the three-game collection appropriatley called The Entire Mystery. Frog Detective first hopped onto PC back in 2018's brisk The Haunted Island, wherein our sleuthing lead travelled to exotic climes to solve the mystery of a sloth-bothering ghost through a relaxed... Baldur's Gate 3 Act Three massively hits CPU performance - but why?

Shortly after our main Baldur's Gate 3 content 'dropped' last week, I noticed a range of comments suggesting that the further you played into it, the more the performance characteristics changed. Early access veterans wanted more specific testing of the third act in particular and thanks to a game save bestowed upon us by Twitter user DarknessFX, we had access to a 99-hour save and were ready to dive into... Game of the week: Dave the Diver's blend of the fixed and the procedural is a recipe for success

Years back I spent a happy afternoon in No Man's Sky just stood on a single spot. This is ridiculous, I know: No Man's Sky's selling point is the moment you launch yourself from a planet's surface, up into space, through the twisting ether and then down onto the surface of another planet without taking a breath. It's a game about movement, and about leaving a place to know that... Read more ›

Twitch bans don't stop people still watching, but that's changing

Twitch streamers will soon be able to block banned users from continuing to watch their live broadcasts. Currently, a ban will only stop disruptive or abusive users from being able to communicate via Twitch chat. But that will change in September with an opt-in feature for all Twitch streamers to immediately cut their live feeds for anyone given a ban. Read more Read more ›

It's the work of Digital Eclipse, the studio behind last year's acclaimed Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration, and promises a similarly styled delve into video... Read more ›

Previously, Tribute revealed Dimension Shellshock would add a new playable character in the form of the Ninja Turtles' occasional ally Miyamoto Usagi - who originally made the jump from his own Usagi Yojimbo comic series into the turtles' world back in 1987 - and the... Baldur's Gate 3 dev "changing the way we deploy patches" following hotfix rollback

Baldur's Gate 3 Developer Larian has said it's "changing the way we deploy patches" after it was forced to rollback yesterday's Hotfix #4 due to crashing issues - a move that temporarily prevented players from accessing any saves made during the time the update was deployed. Understandably, the rollback caused consternation among affected players, and now, in a message accompanying today's redeployment of Hotfix #4 on PC, Larian says, "We... Read more ›

The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood - dealing a powerful hand

The first and only time I had a tarot reading was at one of the lowest points in my life, on the cusp of serious decisions where there didn't seem to be any tolerable solution. It wasn't a serious reading – my friend Veronica had a deck and a basic understanding of tarot, and we sat around her dining table on a quiet afternoon in Los Angeles, trying to make... Read more ›

Chatting with Jesus: the rise of AI streams on Twitch

I'm watching Jesus on Twitch. He's a bearded white man answering philosophical (and not so philosophical) questions from the chat. Just type out a question and Jesus will answer. Of course, Jesus is an AI. At one point, he even admits he's "not the physical Jesus", so at least he sounds self aware. The channel states it was made possible due to contributions from The Singularity Group - not a... Read more ›

Red Dead Redemption on PlayStation has one impressive upgrade

Red Dead Redemption is one of the highest-profile games that has been stuck on seventh-gen console hardware. Rockstar's western epic released all the way back in 2010 on Xbox 360 and PS3, with no proper modern port or PC version to speak of. The best we've had has been backwards compatibility support for Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles - which did at least give us a 2160p presentation on... Read more ›

GTA 5 AI mod taken down by Take-Two lawyers

The creator of a GTA AI mod has had their mod shutdown entirely by Take-Two. Earlier this week we reported on the Sentient Streets mods for GTA 5 created by Bloc, which uses AI to generate free conversations with NPCs. Now, the mod's NexusMods listing and a YouTube video showcasing its gameplay have both been made unavailable due to copyright claims by publisher Take-Two. Sentient Streets is no longer available...
