Head of Sonic Team Takashi Iizuka doesn't think pixel art is a "viable art style" for the future of Sonic, so don't get your hopes up for Sonic Mania 2. In an interview with Games Radar at Gamescom, Iizuka discussed the future of the Sonic franchise and the need to maintain both 2D and 3D Sonic games in parallel. "When we talk about the brand, we definitely need to have... Read more ›

Space games should be terrifying

Hello! Welcome back to Captain's Log, a mini-series on the things we love about space - and how video games so brilliantly engage with it. You can read all of our pieces in the series in one place as they go live, here at the Captain's Log archive. Enjoy! Pity the poor Kerbal. His expression remains passive as his hastily bodged-together ship slingshots around a planetoid and sails off course.... Read more ›

Pioneers of Pagonia, the intriguing new city builder from original The Settlers designer Volker Wertich and his team at Envision Entertainment, is launching into Steam early access on 13th December, with a public demo and closed alpha planned before then. Pioneers of Pagonia, for the uninitiated, whisks players away to the procedurally generated islands of Pagonia, where they'll need to establish a presence - steadily increasingly their reach and influence... Moss developer Polyarc announces live service multiplayer VR game Glassbreakers

I don't think I've ever been quite so enamoured by a menu screen. Spinning wheels and pressing buttons to make selections. Picking up figurines with my hands to inspect them closely. Looking down at the dusty library below me from my cosy attic - a library Moss fans will certainly be familiar with. That's the power of virtual reality, something developer Polyarc is particularly adept at harnessing. Moss and its... Read more ›

Eurogamer and Starfield

Just two days away from Starfield's review embargo, Eurogamer is still to receive a copy of the game from Bethesda. No publisher is obligated to provide a copy of their game to us, but it is important we are able to be transparent with you, our readers, about the delay this will have on the Eurogamer coverage you expect, especially as it has become clear that copies of the game... Call of Duty's Lara Croft mixes classic and reboot Tomb Raider designs

Activision has given us our best look yet at Tomb Raider's Lara Croft in Call of Duty. The design has taken most of its inspiration from the 'Classic Lara' look of old, with her dual pistols, tank top and braid all taking pride of place in the promotional shots released so far (see header above, and image below). This version of Lara also wears the necklace from the Tomb Raider... Read more ›

Fret not puppet fans, Lies of P has fixed its dodge

When Lies of P released a demo back in June, many players found its dodge to be, well, dodgy. It was sluggish and imprecise and made tackling the game's towering bosses more challenging than it should have been. Now that's changed. After receiving feedback from players, developer Neowiz Games has spent time tweaking the dodge ahead of the game's launch next month. "When we switched the dodging part, we made... Read more ›

Armored Core 6 includes iconic Moonlight Greatsword from Dark Souls

Armored Core 6 features the Moonlight Greatsword from Dark Souls, which makes it a Soulslike. I jest of course. The Armored Core series is very much its own thing. But the inclusion of this iconic weapon is a fun Easter egg present through most FromSoftware games. The weapon first appeared in the studio's 1994 game King's Field as the Moonlight Sword and has since appeared in most of its games... Read more ›

Sonic Superstars is classic Sonic, but fundamentally flawed in multiplayer

Sonic is - and has always been - about running really fast. Spin dashing down green hills. Speeding through loops and corkscrews. Grabbing rings with an iconic tinkle as you fly through the air. Sonic Superstars has all that. But what happens if there's more than one player on the screen? Sega's latest 2D Sonic offering (with co-developer Arzest, who worked on Balan Wonderworld) features up to four player co-op... Read more ›

Sea of Stars review - a throwback RPG laced with modern magic and care

Even just looking at Sea of Stars makes one thing clear: it wants to join the ever-growing "I love SNES RPGs" fanclub. We've seen a bunch of those in recent years; games that lovingly recreate the irresistible sprites and 16-bit vistas, while slapping on some upbeat chiptunes to feed you turn-based battles for hours. Sea of Stars does that too, sure, but it's also so much more than that. Perhaps... Read more ›

Microsoft recently slashed the offer from a full month at £1/$1 to just 14 days, back at the start of August.... Read more ›

From a technological perspective, Ascendant Studios' Immortals of Aveum is a highly important game. Excluding Fortnite, created by Epic Games itself, it's the first triple-A game to ship with all of Unreal Engine 5's cutting-edge features in place. That's the microgeometry-based Nanite, capable of astonishing levels of detail, along with Lumen - a ray tracing-based global illumination solution plus virtual shadow maps. Prior to Fortnite, The Matrix Awakens was the... Read more ›
