You can't talk about 2023 in games without talking about layoffs

How is it that 2023 can have been one of the best years in memory for games but also one of the worst years in memory for games, and for the gaming industry. I can't balance this equation - I've been trying all year and it gives me a headache. We should be talking about 2023 as one of the years that will go down in history for games, like 2007... Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora - the big developer tech interview

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora almost came out of nowhere to become one of the best-looking games of the year, with the movie series' iconic setting meshing beautifully with almost Crysis-style gameplay and a newly upgraded Snowdrop engine - which was itself first announced at E3 ten years ago with The Division. Best of all, Avatar is a technical triumph not only on PC, where it pushes the boundaries of graphics... Read more ›

Cherry's KC 200 MX keyboard perfectly demonstrates the firm's exciting new MX2A mechanical switches

From the first few key presses, Cherry's £80/$90 KC 200 MX mechanical keyboard ably demonstrates the genius of the German firm's new MX2A switches - while being a fascinating but not faultless keyboard for typing or gaming in its own right. These switches are undoubtedly the star of the show, and come with a genuine litany of improvements over the original Cherry MX designs that have appeared in basically every... Read more ›

Baldur's Gate 3 is a qualified success on Xbox Series X and S

Baldur's Gate 3 is one of the most critically acclaimed games of the year, an electronic version of a great D&D campaign without the scheduling challenges that also features an incredible amount of flexibility and an engaging player-driven story. This kind of game doesn't always translate well to consoles, but its PS5 outing from September worked quite well, absent some quibbles with the gamepad controls and occasional performance issues. Now... Read more ›

Zenless Zone Zero would be brilliant if it didn't keep wasting your time

There's something missing from Zenless Zone Zero. Armed with a deep combat system, new urban setting, and roster of characters easy to love, it seemed like developer miHoYo was teed up for another win after recent successes Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail. Having spent countless hours immersed in both of these worlds, I'm still fascinated enough to show up for each patch, so miHoYo's newest post-apocalyptic take on their... Read more ›

Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew gets mod support in surprise final update

Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew is one of the year's best releases as far as I'm concerned, but its arrival was bittersweet, given developer Mimimi Games announced it was shutting up shop shortly after. Since then, the team has wrapped up work on two final DLC drops introducing new characters, islands, and more - but it turns out that wasn't quite everything from the studio: in a surprise final update,... Valve's festive treat for "thousands" more DOTA 2 cheaters is a lump of coal and a permanent ban

Valve's making a list, and checking it twice; it's gonna find out who's naughty and nice. And if you happen to be on its Naughty List - which pretty much applies to any one of the "thousands" of DOTA 2 players now identified as being dirty, filthy cheaters - you can expect a cheerfully gift-wrapped lump of toxic coal and a permanent ban in your stocking as your festive treat...
