Loud disapproval for Sonic's original film design has prompted far greater scrutiny within Hollywood for getting video game adaptations right. That's according to the company behind the now-very-successful Sonic the Hedgehog film franchise itself, Paramount Pictures. "Every design now is vetted within an inch of its life," marketing president Marc Weinstock told The Wall St Journal, reflecting on how Sonic was quickly redesigned after widespread upset online. Ascendant Studios' Immortals of Aveum is currently enjoying a new lease of life as a 'free' game on PlayStation Plus - and two major upgrades are coming soon. The first - patch 1.0.6.3 - adds support for high dynamic range and should be rolling out to all console versions of the game today. Perhaps more exciting is the upcoming 1.0.6.4, which brings AMD's FSR 3 frame generation to consoles for... Read more ›

This Early Access VR Mod for the original Tomb Raider could become the best way to play the game

God, I adore flatscreen to VR mods. Honestly, they're just so much more exciting to me than the current crop of official VR releases. A large portion of anticipated titles have been fairly underwhelming to say the least, but thankfully there's absolutely nothing like the feeling of revisiting an all-time classic in VR to make you fall in love with the medium once again.Being able to explore digital worlds that... When the martial arts met Bond: The story of Saboteur

I'm sitting opposite Saboteur's coder, Clive Townsend, at a retro gaming show in the Midlands. Two pints separate us: beer for me, cider for him - ever the West Country boy - and Townsend is affable, smiling and jovial. "20 years ago, I could have reached across this table and rendered you unconscious in two seconds," he grins. I laugh nervously while swigging a mouthful of Spanish lager. "But I've... Read more ›

Hi-Fi Rush on PS5 and the Xbox multi-platform story so far

Hi-Fi Rush recently arrived on PlayStation 5 and as contentious as the idea of Xbox going 'multi-plat' in any way may be, the strategy so far is sound. Lower profile titles that aren't exactly triple-A juggernauts gain a new lease of life on competing console hardware. Giving titles like Hi-Fi Rush more of a chance to find a bigger audience can only be a good thing for the games themselves,... Read more ›

Meet the 57-year-old who just released his first video game

At the age of 57, Chris Mandra has just released his first video game. This is something I find truly remarkable. For all the modern talk about portfolio careers and the death of a job-for-life, the idea of embarking on a completely new career in your sixth decade on Earth seems astonishing. At the age of 44, I sometimes daydream about starting out again, venturing into the unknown, maybe writing... Read more ›

Dell Alienware AW3225QF review: the best 32-inch QD-OLED for UK buyers

Earlier this month I reviewed the Asus ROG Swift PG32UCDM, a 32-inch QD-OLED gaming monitor that combines a 4K resolution with 240Hz refresh rate, impressive HDR and fewer downsides than your typical OLED panel - albeit at an eye-watering £1350 asking price. I noted that while the Asus monitor was a technical tour de force and the best gaming monitor I'd ever tested, it's not necessarily the best value 32-inch... Read more ›

Game of the week: Sometimes the best thing is when you give the game away

This is the second time I've written this week's Game of the Week. The game has remained the same, though. That's the first part of the trick. Our game this week is, of course, Timemelters, by Autoexec. It's the spiritual sequel to one of my all time favourites, Sang-Froid: Tales of Werewolves. In both games you play a version of tower defence that's enlivened by unusual powers and unusual weaknesses. You... Read more ›

What we've been playing - pools, crates, and tombs

Hello! Welcome back to our regular feature where we write a little bit about some of the games we've been playing over the past few days. This week: swimming pools, crates and tombs. If you fancy catching up on some of the older editions of What We've Been Playing, here's our archive. My wife is completely fascinated by the whole liminal spaces scene online. These are slightly Gibsonian faux-found-footage clips of office... Read more ›

Niantic: Pokémon Go healthy and growing as it approaches its next decade

How much does someone who built the foundations of Pokémon Go still play the game, eight years on? It's the first question I ask Ed Wu, senior vice president of Pokémon Go, as we set off on a walk together around a leafy London park - our phones in hand, Pokémon Go open. "I spend as much of my time beating up the game as possible," he laughs. This is... Read more ›
