A love letter to Dead Rising 2: Case Zero, one of the best demos of all time (even if it isn't really a demo)

Last week marked 15 years since Dead Rising 2 made its debut. For my money, Dead Rising 2 is one of the best unlikely success sequels going, but whenever I think of it, I can't help but remember its prologue even more fondly. Read more Read more ›

What we've been playing - mud slides, 9-0 wins, retro difficulty anguish, and space hoppers

Hello and welcome back to our regular feature where we write a little bit about some of the games we've been playing. This week, Kelsey digs out the DS to play The Urbz, for some reason; Tom inadvisably asks Jim for some help in Baby Steps; Marie leaps over a wall on a space hopper; Ed is determined to learn Final Fantasy Tactics, which keeps kicking his ass; Connor buys... Digimon Time Stranger reminds me of the best (and worst) of PS2 era RPGs, and that's why I can't put it down

I think Digimon Story: Time Stranger is secretly a PS2 era Shin Megami Tensei game. That's very much my taste in RPGs. Given this is sort-of a kid's game (OK, it's got a PEGI 12 rating because of 'bad language', 'in-game purchases', and - bafflingly - 'sex'), that is a pretty big surprise. I've come to this conclusion after sinking a good 50 hours into the game, and being taken... Read more ›

Clover Pit does for slot machines what Balatro did for poker, and I can't stop spinning

It's almost shameful. To play Clover Pit is to collide with gambling head-on. There, in front of you, is a slot machine, perhaps the purest expression of casino gambling there is. And there's the handle on the side of the machine for you to spin the drum within. Go ahead and rotate the columns of symbols in the hope they'll slow and stop into a scoring pattern on the screen.... Read more ›

The Sims 4's Adventure Awaits expansion is exactly the kind of getaway I've been looking for

In this, the year of unmitigated bullshit, a bit of a jolly holiday away from it all's probably what most of us could do with. So consider it fortuitous timing, then, that The Sims 4's latest expansion, Adventure Awaits, provides exactly that. Unfortunately, like holidays often do, it also comes with a bunch of screaming children. Boo. Read more Read more ›

If Xbox Game Pass dies then we'll have lost one of gaming's best tools for discovery

I'm not going to argue that Game Pass, following its recent price hike, is cheap. It's not. It's creeped into the "hmm" category, similar to the £35 a month phone contract I'd scowl at every time I looked over my bank statement, which had actually gone from "mmm" to "mmm?" and was followed by a cost-cutting exercise that has now made me £28 a month better off, albeit with an... This leveraged buyout would be the largest in history, and if approved, will mean the industry giant would be a private company in 2027. Read more Read more ›
