Sumerian Six's pulpy stealth-tactics almost manages to fill that Mimimi-shaped hole

Sumerian Six gets two things right immediately as far as I’m concerned. One, it lets you punch a bunch of Nazis in a pulpy 1930s setting, and two, it’s the kind of old-school, sight-cone-dodging stealth-tactics game I’m a sucker for. These things don’t come around too often, being a niche within a niche and all, and they feel especially rare now after the genre suffered a major blow last year... Read more ›

This week's DF Direct Weekly is what you might call a 'come down' episode. After the highs of the Sony State of Play, Summer Games Fest and the best Xbox Showcase in years, we take things a little more slowly - though we do spend a fair amount of time looking at Ubisoft Forward. While the gaming content gets plenty of commentary, it's actually the quality of the live streaming... Read more ›

Still Wakes the Deep review - astonishing artistry can't quite keep this oil rig horror afloat

As horror locations go, an oil rig is a doozy. It's remote, isolated, claustrophobic on the inside and not much better on the outside, what with its thrashing storms and merciless seas. But for all its bleakness, there's warmth and life, a last bit of humanity and light at the edge of the world - and Still Wakes the Deep, the latest from Dear Esther and Everybody's Gone to the... Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree is a chance to return to the real game FromSoftware is always secretly playing

One of those rare clarifying moments in my life came when I was told that the whale in Moby Dick didn't symbolise anything. Or rather, it didn't symbolise any one single thing in a fixed and coherent way. The whale might symbolise a handful of things, and those things might contradict one another and you'd just have to live with it. Also the whale was simultaneously a whale - no... Read more ›
