App usage and global ad spend jump in Q1 2022

While global app adoption and consumer in-app purchases were flat during Q1 2022 compared to 2021, the number of monthly active users grew almost 5% according to new data released by Sensor Tower.  Some app categories such as medical apps were particularly popular, more than doubling its active monthly users.  Navigation apps saw the second-highest growth in usage, jumping 23.5% while travel ranked third at 19%. Facebook targeting inaccurate a third of the time

Roughly 30% of Facebook advertiser targeting by interest is inaccurate or irrelevant according to a study from North Carolina State University.  The researchers examined how Facebook tracks behaviours and topics of users and found that around a third of the time interest tracking wasn’t accurate.  The researchers also recruit 146 participants internationally and developed a browser extension to extract data from their Facebook accounts based on their data. Twitter opens up Professional Profiles to all users

Twitter is now enabling users to change their accounts to Professional Profiles. The option had previously only been available to select accounts. Users of shopping apps visit stores more often than non-app users

Mobile app users visited brick-and-mortar stores 41% more often during a 12-month period compared to non-app owners, according to new research from Inmobi.  The study found that retail and QSR app owners visited stores 39% more frequently while store visits for big box retailer app owners were 24% more frequent and 25% more frequent among grocery app owners. Signal and Telegram app installs jump 197% in Ukraine

Adoption of encrypted messaging apps Telegram and Signal spiked in Ukraine following Russia’s invasion in late February.  Installs climbed 197% according to Sensor Tower. Collectively the two apps saw 1.7 million installs between February and March, up 197% from 573k in January. Mobile games generate over $6 billion in player spending

Mobile games generated around $6.6 billion in player spending across the App Store and Google Play in February 2022 alone, a decrease of 7.6% from the previous year. The US was the top market for revenues, generating $1.9 billion or 28.6% of player spending. Japan ranked second at 18.8%, trailed by China (17%).
