IBM: Europe was the world’s most targeted region for cyberattacks in 2023

Cyberattacks hit Europe more than any other region in 2023, according to new research from IBM. The continent accounted for a whopping 32% of incidents analysed by the tech giant. That pushes it past last year’s biggest target, Asia-Pacific, which drops from first to third with 23%. North America jumps into second place with 26% of all cases. Across the globe, the biggest technical shift was the growing abuse of... Read more â€ș

Cybercrime hunters disrupt ‘most active ransomware group ever’

LockBit, one of the world’s most infamous cybercrime gangs, has been disrupted by the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) and international law enforcement agencies including Europol and the FBI. The gang is known for holding victims’ data to ransom and its ransomware-as-a-service operation, whereby it licenses malware to other hackers who then launch attacks. LockBit has seen rapid growth since its emergence in 2019. According to Europol, in 2022, it... Read more â€ș

Turning AI frenzy into fundraising strategy: How startups can win the 2024 investment race

Until now, generative AI has been akin to fairy dust — just sprinkle it in your pitch, and investors are all too ready to open their wallets wide. Inside Finland’s state-of-the-art quantum computing hardware ecosystem

In 1965, cryogenics pioneer Olli V. Lounasmaa set up the Low Temperature Laboratory (LTL) at what is now Aalto University to research ultra-low temperature physics. Despite some initial scepticism because “why would anyone want to research cold in Finland,” the LTL has prospered, attracting researchers from all over the world — and laying the foundation for Finland’s leading quantum computing startup ecosystem.  Quantum computing has long been the stuff of... Why no one knows quite when a descending satellite will hit Earth this week

A satellite will hurtle down to Earth this week and no one knows quite when or where it’s going to land — but there’s no need to worry. In the space sector, this is standard operating procedure.  The satellite in question is the European Space Agency’s ERS-2. Launched in 1995, the spacecraft set new standards for Earth observation. It was also an extremely durable machine. Despite an original mission life... Read more â€ș

The European Union is set to fine Apple €500mn for allegedly elbowing out competitors to its music streaming business, the Financial Times reported on Sunday, citing unmanned sources familiar with the matter.   EU officials first started investigating the matter in 2019, following a complaint for Spotify. We tested the world’s cleanest snowmobile — and it goes like a rocket

With the flip of a switch, the snowmobile springs to life. The batteries beneath my seat engage, and launch me at lightning speed through the fresh white powder ahead. Soon I am gliding across a frozen lake in Swedish Lapland like a speedboat on water.  Mindful not to get carried away, I loop back toward the starting point, engaging the brakes just before the treeline. The sled skids to a... Read more â€ș

AI chip tags can fight espionage from hostile states, report says

Tags on chips and a global registry of their locations can reduce the risks of AI espionage by hostile nations, experts say. The proposals were made in a new report on AI safety, which calls for a stronger regulation of hardware. Three Cambridge University institutes co-led the study paper, alongside OpenAI and the GovAI research community. They fear that governments are overlooking the dangers of compute, which could trigger disasters.... Read more â€ș

Anti-piracy messages encourage MORE piracy — if you’re a man

Anti-piracy campaigns can actually cause more piracy — if you’re a man. So say the cybercrime experts at the University of Portsmouth, who investigated efforts to deter illegal torrenting, streaming, and file-sharing. To test the techniques, the researchers exposed 962 adults to threatening messages used in anti-piracy campaigns. They then evaluated potential changes in behaviour. They discovered a cavernous gender gap. The messages led piracy intentions to decline by 52%... Read more â€ș

DeepMind COO on building a responsible future for AI and humanity

Recently, a New Zealand-based supermarket was miffed to find its AI meal bot going haywire. Instead of providing wholesome recipe suggestions using its products, it had begun suggesting dishes such as “bleach-infused rice surprise” and “mysterious meat stew” (with the mysterious meat being human flesh). While this may have been a bit of fun for internet pranksters who prompted the bot with ever more outlandish ingredients, it also raises a... Read more â€ș
