5 ways to accomplish nothing and still feel exhausted

People ask me all the time: how do you manage to be constantly burnt out while also accomplishing very little? It’s not easy. It takes years of concerted effort. You have to build up habits, to the point where the line between work and time-wasting is essentially blurred. It takes a total lack of self-awareness and an inability to reflect on your own shortcomings. Not to brag, but I’m somewhat... Read more

Android Auto is reading notifications in the wrong language — and Google’s solution is terrible

Over the past 18 months, some Android Auto users have reported that Android Auto is getting its languages confused and reading notifications in a garbled mess of words that make no sense. Based on what users are reporting, it seems that Google Assistant in the car-based app is attempting to read incoming messages in a secondary language, but is interpreting those messages based on its primary language. One French user,... Read more

Jack Dorsey: “I do not celebrate” Trump’s Twitter ban

Just a few days ago, Twitter banned outgoing President Donald Trump, taking away his favorite distraction. While many welcomed the move as a preventative step for future violence following the unprecedented attack on the US Capitol, others condemned it as an overreach. Not all of the latter were necessarily Trump supporters either; German Chancellor Angela Merkel called the move “problematic,” a sentiment shared by some who worry about the power... Read more

HTC is apparently still making phones, announces the Desire 21 Pro 5G

After Google bought a major portion of HTC‘s phone-making talent back in 2017, the company has been largely quiet in the mobile department, focusing on its VR aspirations instead. But as it turns out, the company is still churning out phones, as noted by today’s unveiling of the Desire 21 Pro 5G. And no, this one has nothing to do with blockchain. Mouthful of a name aside, the phone looks... Read more

COVID-19-Lockdown-Stay home-Physical distancing-Online shopping-Demand for delivery. The above set of words sum up most of 2020. With the physical world of retail becoming less accessible, the convenience of online shopping has made the former even less attractive and has driven consumers to expect on-demand delivery for almost everything (if not all) they need. As per the World Economic Forum & a report from IBM, E-commerce was projected to grow by... Read more

Scientists figured out how to stop time using quantum algorithms

Everyone’s always talking about traveling through time, but if you ask me the ultimate temporal vacation would be just to pause the clock for a bit. Who among us couldn’t use a five or six month break after 2020 before we commit to an entire new calendar year? It’s not you 2021; it’s us. Unfortunately, this isn’t an episode of Rick and Morty so we can’t stop time until we’re... Read more

Surveillance group exposes disturbing Huawei patent for AI-powered Uighur detection

A Huawei patent that mentions AI-powered identification of Uighur people and other ethnic groups has been discovered. The patent was exposed by video surveillance research group IPVM, the same organization that had previously spotted references to an AI “Uighur alarm” on Huawei‘s website, as well as evidence that Alibaba had offered “Uighur-detection-as-a-service.” IPVM also recently found 12 government projects from the last few years that mandate Uighur analytics across the... Google’s new trillion-parameter AI language model is almost 6 times bigger than GPT-3

A trio of researchers from the Google Brain team recently unveiled the next big thing in AI language models: a massive one trillion-parameter transformer system. The next biggest model out there, as far as we’re aware, is OpenAI’s GPT-3, which uses a measly 175 billion parameters. Background: Language models are capable of performing a variety of functions but perhaps the most popular is the generation of novel text. For example,... Read more

We ranked the best (and worst) EV pedestrian warning noises

Electric vehicles are fast and stealthy. With no combustion engine or exhaust noise, they have the ability to sneak up on pedestrians without much of a warning. This is bad enough for the average road user, but for the visually impaired, it represents an even bigger danger. Thankfully, legislation that requires EVs to make an audible pedestrian warning has been passed in a number of important EV markets, like the... Read more

Oh, great — Uber and Lyft are actually increasing car ownership in US cities

Ride hailing apps like Uber and Lyft were created with a Silicon Valley mindset to “disrupt,” and change how we travel, supposedly for the better. The platforms were supposed to provide alternatives to private car travel and ultimately decrease car ownership. However, a recent study suggests that this isn’t entirely the case and ride hailing apps actually increase car ownership, especially in cities that are already dependent on cars. Researchers... Thank god, 2021 is shorter than 2020 by 1 second — here’s why

The Earth is spinning faster than it has at any time in the last 50 years, careful study of our planet reveals. Each of the 28 shortest days ever measured came in 2020. It is possible this may require shortening the standard time on which much of our technological systems are based. “The Earth is spinning faster now than at any time in the last 50 years. It’s quite possible... Read more

However, that network ran into all sorts of trouble because of content that can potentially incite violence. Razer shows off a super extra mask at CES — I want it on my face

It’s a new year, but the same dreaded pandemic. We’ve been wearing masks for a long time now, so companies are trying to get creative and offer something unique by way of protective gear. I’ve seen some masks that play on style and some on function  — like this one with a Bluetooth headset. Last night, Razer showed off a new ‘smart mask’ called Project Hazel. The N95 mask has...
