Focal Radiance review: The literal Bentley of headphones sounds fantastic

The Focal Radiance is the literal Bentley of headphones. A limited edition model by the French high-end audio company, the headphones were designed in partnership with Bentley, while retaining much of the design language of Focal’s other luxury headphones. Thankfully, they retain that high-end sound as well — as one would hope, for $1,300 (£1199/€1300). The Radiance is a gloriously flashy closed-back headphone. The black design with copper accents and... Read more

Apple Music will soon make it way easier to add songs to your queue

Apple Music works smoothly if you’re using an iPhone or an iPad. But adding new songs to your listening queue isn’t a one-tap experience. Here’s our best look at the rumored Sonos headphones

We’ve been hearing rumors that Sonos is working on its own pair of headphones for some time now and even saw some early patents show off what the headphones might look like. As spotted by The Verge, a new design filed to the German Patent and Trademark Office might give us our best idea of what the headphones will actually look like — at least in line drawing form. Low... Read more

Experimental brain research makes it seem less likely we’re living in the Matrix

The evidence we all exist in base reality – or at least a base reality – is starting to pile up. A team of researchers from the US and the UK recently conducted a groundbreaking study into the neurological conditions of two people living without the sense of touch. Most people orient their conscious existence with the world through a combination of our five senses. We can see a ball... Read more

Researchers used AI to determine which overlooked animals could host a new coronavirus

A new AI study has identified many more potential host species for new coronaviruses than are currently known. Scientists from the University of Liverpool used machine learning to predict which mammals could be sources for new strains of the virus. They detected a number of species implicated in previous outbreaks, including horseshoe bats, and pangolins — as well as some new candidates. [Read: How Polestar is using blockchain to increase... This robotic glove uses AI to help people with hand weakness regain muscle grip

A Scottish biotech startup has invented an AI-powered robotic glove that helps people recover muscle grip in their hands. BioLiberty designed the glove for people who suffer from hand weakness, due to age or illnesses such as motor neurone disease and carpal tunnel syndrome. The system detects their intention to grip by using electromyography (EMT) to measure the electrical activity generated by a nerve’s stimulation of the muscle. An algorithm... Read more

Zut alors! France spanks Google over ‘misleading’ hotel ranking algorithm

France’s competition watchdog has slapped Google with a €1.1 million ($1.3 million) fine over “misleading” hotel rankings generated by the tech giant’s algorithms. The Directorate-General for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Repression of Fraud (DGCCRF) began to probe Google’s classifications after hoteliers complained about their ratings. The investigation revealed that Google had replaced the rankings used by France’s tourism agency (Atout France) with the company’s own grading system. The DGCCRF found... Read more

A brief history of phones with two screens

Last week, a leak from YouTube channel Tech Buff PH showed off Xiaomi’s upcoming Mi 11 Ultra. Other specs aside, the phone’s most intriguing aspect was a second screen on the back. This screen should be helpful when you’re taking photos with the rear camera, and might even show notifications. That got us thinking: the concept of having a second screen on a phone is not new. In fact, we’ve... Read more

Apple may release an iPhone 13 mini (and this is a good thing)

The iPhone 12 mini hasn’t been a success. The device hasn’t even been out six months and already there are reports that Apple is set to cut its successive model. But we may have been too rash: the iPhone 13 mini could actually be a thing. Okay, let’s get the bad news out the way. The source for this fact is Jon Prosser. If you’ve ever come across him, he’s... Can we be friends with robots? Research says yes

In the 2012 film “Robot and Frank,” the protagonist, a retired cat burglar named Frank, is suffering the early symptoms of dementia. Concerned and guilty, his son buys him a “home robot” that can talk, do household chores like cooking and cleaning, and reminds Frank to take his medicine. It’s a robot the likes of which we’re getting closer to building in the real world. The film follows Frank, who... Read more

NASA’s Perseverance rover to face ‘7 minutes of terror’ before landing on Mars

Following “seven minutes of terror” after it reaches Mars’ upper atmosphere, NASA’s Perseverance rover is expected to land on the surface of the red planet at 20:55 GMT on February 18. This is incredibly hard to do, with only about 40% of missions succeeding. As a member of the team that built the European Space Agency’s Rosalind Franklin rover (we made the PanCam, the camera “eyes” of the rover), which... Read more

Pay attention to your ‘sonic logo’ in 2021

We’re living a lot of our lives virtually, increasingly looking to digital channels and platforms for shopping, entertainment, and educational needs. Unsurprisingly, many people now have their first encounter with a brand online yet marketers are letting the sound of their brand blow away in the wind.   Few are paying attention to crafting an effective and recognizable sonic signature, which is ridiculous when you think how much sound and music... Android 12’s rumored one-handed mode could make big phones more usable

People love big phones, and companies oblige that demand by releasing devices with monster screens. Heck, even the “mid-sized” iPhone 12 has a 6.1-inch screen. Phones with big displays give you more screen estate to view content bigly, stack two apps in the splitscreen mode, and pack more icons on a page. But sometimes it’s really hard to reach across the screen with one hand. [Read: Leaked Android 12 screenshots... Read more

Carl Pei’s ‘Nothing’ now owns the Essential brand, and I’m kinda hyped

Here’s one bit of surprising tech news: Essential, the smartphone company launched by Android co-creator Andy Rubin, is not dead quite yet. The brand has instead been acquired by Nothing, the upstart tech company created by OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei. The news, via a report by 9to5Google, comes out of left field, considering Pei had so far only teased upcoming earbuds from his new company. While the idea that Nothing... Read more

10 months later, Google’s Pixel Buds are still my favorite earbuds

I first reviewed Google’s Pixel Buds — the second generation, “true wireless” model — back in April of 2020. At the time, I was impressed by their tight integration with Android devices, solid sound quality, and reliable controls. But my review was written after only a few days with the earbuds; though that’s normally long enough to make a useful assessment, sometimes my impressions of a product change over the... Read more
