Amazon Echo and Google Home could monitor your heartbeat without even touching you

Scientists have developed a new smart speaker system that could turn the Amazon Echo and Google Home into contactless heartbeat monitors. The AI-powered system sends inaudible sounds from the speakers towards a person sitting nearby. When they bounce back, algorithms analyze the sound waves to determine the heart rate. Researchers from the University of Washington tested the device on healthy people and hospitalized cardiac patients. They found that the smart... Read more

Facebook is now testing Reels…because how else will it beat TikTok?

When TikTok was banned in India last June, Instagram jumped on the short video bandwagon very quickly and launched Reels. The company rolled out the feature globally in August 2020. Now, its parent company Facebook is integrating Reels in the blue app. The firm is testing the feature in India by giving access to select creators to share Reels they created on Instagram to the Facebook app. If they share... Google plans to scrap third-party cookies by 2022 — here’s why it’s problematic

Google has announced plans to stop using tracking cookies on its Chrome browser by 2022, replacing them with a group profiling system in a move the company says will plot “a course towards a more privacy-friendly web.” The change is significant. Chrome commands some two-thirds of the web browser market. Third-party tracking cookies, meanwhile, underpin much of the targeted advertising industry. And, while Mozilla’s Firefox and Apple’s Safari have already... Read more

We scored iOS 14.4.1 based on how ‘inspirational’ it is

Okay, this is my latest shot at the Pulitzer — that means I best fully embrace this opportunity to give iOS 14.4.1 a score out of ten based on how inspirational I deem it to be. My mind? Ready. My body? Raring. My will? Pure steel. So, compatriots and enemies, lovers and enemies, friends and enemies, I am here to claim my birthright and give iOS 14.4.1 the rating it... Read more

Founders: Here’s how to pick the right VC in this ‘high deal’ market

We all know that VCs operate in a roughly outlined remit when supporting startups and scale-ups: pre-seed, seed, early-stage (Series A), and growth stage (Series B and beyond). However, I’ve noticed that, increasingly, typically growth stage investors are investing in rounds as early as seed. Covid-19 has leveled out this seemingly stiffly-structured playing field by streamlining the process of accessing and determining the companies that could best fit a VC’s... Read more

BMW ‘isn’t afraid’ of the Apple Car… and is still refusing to go all-electric

Maybe it’s a power move. Maybe it’s an attempt to stay relevant. Maybe it’s being genuine. Whatever the case, BMW’s CFO Nicholas Peter seems intent on going head-to-head with the Apple Car. In an interview with Bloomberg, published yesterday, Peter made a number of attestations laying down the challenge to the Apple Car. Peter nonchalantly welcomed the potential newcomer to the market, suggesting that BMW is either totally not worried... Read more

Here’s why you’re not receiving OTPs in India right now

If you’re making an online payment in India using a card or via net banking, you have to go through a two-factor authentication process. The 2FA is usually in form of a One Time Password (OTP), delivered through a text message. However, many Indians are facing troubles with payments since yesterday as their OTPs are not getting delivered. This is disrupting many online and offline businesses who rely on digital... Worry not, for it seems the Surface Laptop 4 may allow you more choice between Team Red or Team Blue. The rumor comes courtesy of German site WinFuture, which has an excellent track record with leaks. Based on the report, it appears Microsoft might offer... Read more

Why you shouldn’t expect Tesla’s ‘Full Self Driving’ to come out of beta any time soon

Tesla’s recent decision to open its Full Self Driving (FSD) beta to new owners has created quite a splash in both the automobile and consumer tech markets. This is an exciting time to be a Tesla owner, FSD is one of the most innovative software packages we’ve seen in an automobile. But it’s also misleading. As I’ve written before, Tesla’s Full Self Driving software is not a full self driving... Read more

AI generates trippy music video inspired by 50,000 album covers

A Spanish artist has created a trippy music video by training a deep-learning algorithm on thousands of album covers. Bruno López produced the video by using a combination of Spotify data, Python scripts, and Generative Adversarial Networks. He first created a script that downloaded the album covers for every track featured on Spotify’s official editorial playlists. The result was a dataset of around 50,000 covers with individual resolutions of 640... Read more

The SolarWinds hack proves US cyber defenses are a mess — here’s how to fix them

The SolarWinds hack was more than just one of the most devastating cyberattacks in history. It was a major breach of national security that revealed gaps in U.S. cyber defenses. These gaps include inadequate security by a major software producer, fragmented authority for government support to the private sector, and a national shortfall in software and cybersecurity skills. None of these gaps is easily bridged, but the scope and impact... Read more

SAE’s vehicle automation classification system is bunk — it’s time for a fresh start

I didn’t want to have to do this, but we need to talk. The levels of automation thought up by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) are not what you think. It’s probably time that we let them go. Human-machine interaction researcher Liza Dixon summed up the reason why quite clearly in a Tweet yesterday. In short, the main problem is that they’re way more complicated, and nuanced than carmakers... Read more

An entrepreneur’s last attempt at regaining productivity: Ditching social media in 2021

Here’s what Hasselblad is doing to improve OnePlus’ next phone cameras

While OnePlus phones are a great option for folks to get class-leading performance and screens for under $700, they haven’t been the best at photography.
