Scientists developed a clever way to detect Deepfakes by analyzing light reflections in the eyes

Deepfakes are used for a range of nefarious purposes, from disinformation campaigns to inserting people into porn, and the doctored images are getting harder to detect. A new AI tool provides a surprisingly simple way of spotting them: looking at the light reflected in the eyes. The system was created by computer scientists from the University at Buffalo. In tests on portrait-style photos, the tool was 94% effective at detecting... Read more â€ș

Here’s how VW recycles its EV batteries — but it’s got to scale up FAST

What should we do with electric vehicle battery packs when they can no longer power a car? In this day and age, there is only one answer: recycle. Even though the transition to battery electric vehicles is only beginning, we’re well aware of the need to recycle and reuse the precious metals and components contained within lithium-ion batteries. Given how intensive mining processes are, it’s a total waste to not... Read more â€ș

Amsterdam tree versus Jaguar i-Page: Jag wins

When we talk about the future of cars, most of the time we are talking about electric drivetrains. But we shouldn’t forget that as technology develops and gets more advanced, cars are also getting safer. This case in point was made today in a windy Amsterdam when a tree fell on a Jaguar i-Pace EV, and left it totally unfazed as two other cars — an Audi and Mercedes —... Read more â€ș

Do space microbes like radioactive waste?

Microbes living beneath the seafloor feed largely on the products of radioactive decay, aided by sediment of the seafloor, a new study reveals. This finding radically changes how we look at life processes in one of the largest ecosystems on our planet. It could also alter our views of how life may have evolved on Mars or other alien worlds. Typically, it was believed that organic material was the primary... Read more â€ș

iPhone 13 rumored to have bigger batteries — but I’m conflicted

We’re months away from the iPhone 13 launch, but analyst Ming-Chi Kuo’s usually accurate investor notes are telling us a lot about what to expect from Apple’s upcoming devices. We already know that this year’s iPhones will feature a smaller front notch and the Pro models will have a display with 120Hz refresh rate support. Now, in a recent investor note seen by MacRumors, Kuo has said that the new... Read more â€ș

Contemplating automated testing? Calculate your ROI first

In software development, speed has become the defining characteristic of product launches. It sets the standard we can’t really escape anymore. It places demands on market players both old and new: release now, fix the issues later. Launch the feature today or watch your competitors outpace you. Meet the deadline or lose a vitally important partner/client.  These are all thoughts and ideas most product managers, CTOs, and team leads have... Read more â€ș

Last September, a ton of users found that Twitter’s image cropping algorithm seemingly had a white bias. In response, Twitter said it would give users control over how images appear on their feeds while the possible bias was being investigated — but then never delivered
until now. The company announced last night that if you post a single image on your feed, it’ll appear the same as it looked in the... Read more â€ș

Snowmen can’t walk — but your Tesla thinks they can

Picture yourself driving down a city street. You go around a curve, and suddenly see something in the middle of the road ahead. What should you do? Of course, the answer depends on what that ‘something’ is. A torn paper bag, a lost shoe, or a tumbleweed? You can drive right over it without a second thought, but you’ll definitely swerve around a pile of broken glass. You’ll probably stop... Read more â€ș

Study: It might be unethical to force AI to tell us the truth

Until recently, deceit was a trait unique to living beings. But these days artificial intelligence agents lie to us and each other all the time. The most popular example of dishonest AI came a couple years back when Facebook developed an AI system that created its own language in order to simplify negotiations with itself. Once it was able to process inputs and outputs in a language it understood, the... Read more â€ș

Why people should get paid to let AI do their jobs for them

The idea of a universal minimum/basic income (UBI) isn’t new or nearly as radical as those both in favor and opposed to it would have you believe. Dozens of cities across the globe are either currently running or have run UBI test programs. And the results are usually positive. Simply put: the outcomes for people who receive a UBI are typically demonstrably better than people in similar financial and economic... Read more â€ș
