The company today announced a series of features coming to the social network that will provide users and creators with a variety ofnew tools to make and share audio experiences. The gist of it is that Facebook wants to put a... Read more â€ș

Fitbit’s new $150 Luxe aims to be a more stylish fitness tracker

Most fitness trackers are rather drab things. Sure, there are some smartwatches that toe the line between technology and fashion decently enough, but if you want a more basic device that emphasizes the fitness-tracking aspect, there isn’t too much to choose from. Fitbit is trying to fill this gap with its new $150 Luxe tracker. As one might presume from the name, it aims to be Fitbit’s most stylish tracker... Read more â€ș

Oh great, Apple is letting Parler back onto the App Store

In wonderful news for far-right extremists and conspiracy theorists, Apple is letting Parler back onto the App Store. The iPhone maker banned the controversial app in January after receiving complaints that the service had been used to coordinate the siege on the US Capitol. The Silicon Valley giant also found posts on the social network that “encouraged violence, denigrated various ethnic groups, races, and religions, glorified Nazism, and called for... Read more â€ș

New research: We won’t travel faster than light anytime soon, but we might be able to distort the flow of time

In 1994, physicist Miguel Alcubierre proposed a radical technology that would allow faster than light travel: the warp drive, a hypothetical way to skirt around the universe’s ultimate speed limit by bending the fabric of reality. It was an intriguing idea – even NASA has been researching it at the Eagleworks laboratory – but Alcubierre’s proposal contained problems that seemed insurmountable. Now, a recent paper by US-based physicists Alexey Bobrick... Read more â€ș

The UK is considering creating a ‘Britcoin’ to repair Broken Britain

The UK has joined the list of countries considering the creation of a central bank digital currency (CBDC). Chancellor Rishi Sunak today announced a new task force that will explore the value of a CBDC, which would be issued by the Bank of England and used by households and businesses. It would exist alongside cash and bank deposits, rather than replace them. Sunak (jokingly?) suggested the digital currency could be... Read more â€ș

A closer look at Polestar’s 2030 climate neutral car

An electric vehicle successfully takes tailpipe emissions out of the environmental equation. Fact. Charge it with renewable energy and its impact flatlines. Great. But while all this is preferable to a traditionally fuelled vehicle that will continue to pollute throughout its lifetime, a Polestar 2 still leaves the factory gates with a 26-ton CO2e production footprint. And we believe it doesn’t have to.In fact, we’re committing to creating a completely... Read more â€ș

NASA just made history by flying an autonomous helicopter on Mars

NASA has made history after successfully conducting the first-ever controlled flight on another planet. The space agency’s Ingenuity helicopter briefly flew over Mars this morning, in what NASA previously described as a “Wright Brothers” moment. The 1.8 kg chopper ascended three meters above the red planet, hovered for around 30 seconds, made a turn, and then touched back down on the Martian surface. “We can now say that human beings... The latest Tesla crash is another tragic reminder that cars can’t drive themselves

Last week, we had to read the sad story of the death of two men that were traveling in a Tesla that left the road at high speed, and crashed into a tree. It subsequently burst into flames, it took firefighters hours to subdue the blaze. It’s believed that Autopilot was engaged at the time, and local media reports that no one was in the driver’s seat. I used to be great at my job
 then I founded a startup

Usually, I’d hit my groove in a job when I was about 6 months in. At that point, all the little things that had confused me at first started making sense and my performance started to reflect that. But during the whirlwind last 6 months of launching my own startup with another first-timer — I’ve realized I’ll never experience that again. So herein lies the memoir of a relatively new... The PS5 is the fastest selling console in US history — so why can’t I get one?

Sony released the PS5 five months ago — and in that time it’s become the fastest selling console in US history. I have a question though: how can this be true when it seems I have a higher chance of acquiring one through a genie’s wish than a retailer? Who is managing to buy all these things? According to a tweet thread from the analysis firm NPD Group, the PS5... Read more â€ș

China’s record fine against Alibaba spells the end of Big Tech’s romance with the state

China’s state-run anti-monopoly bureau has tightened its regulations on big tech players, as shown by its recent move against the country’s largest e-commerce company, Alibaba Group. Alibaba was hit with a record antitrust fine of 18.2 billion yuan (more than A$3.6 billion) over the weekend for supposedly abusing its market dominance. The company, which operates the digital payment platform Alipay and offers bank loans to entrepreneurs, issued a public apology:... Read more â€ș

What we can learn from sequencing 1 million human genomes with big data

The first draft of the human genome was published 20 years ago in 2001, took nearly three years and cost between US$500 million and $1 billion. The Human Genome Project has allowed scientists to read, almost end to end, the 3 billion pairs of DNA bases – or “letters” – that biologically define a human being. That project has allowed a new generation of researchers like me, currently a postdoctoral... Read more â€ș

Boston Dynamics’ latest robot doesn’t do backflips — and that’s a smart move

Boston Dynamics has made a name for itself through fascinating videos of biped and quadruped robots doing backflips, opening doors, and dancing to Uptown Funk. Now, it has revealed its latest gadget: A robot that looks like a huge overhead projector on wheels. It’s called Stretch, it doesn’t do backflips, it doesn’t dance, and it’s made to do one task: moving boxes. It sounds pretty boring. But this could, in... Read more â€ș

Here’s why we should never trust AI to identify our emotions

Imagine you are in a job interview. As you answer the recruiter’s questions, an artificial intelligence (AI) system scans your face, scoring you for nervousness, empathy and dependability. It may sound like science fiction, but these systems are increasingly used, often without people’s knowledge or consent. Emotion recognition technology (ERT) is in fact a burgeoning multi-billion-dollar industry that aims to use AI to detect emotions from facial expressions. Yet the... Read more â€ș
