Brainboxes find new way to revive dead lithium-ion batteries

Scientists led by Finland’s Aalto University have a found a way to revive lithium-ion batteries and to facilitate their reuse, pv magazine reports. “Re-lithiation” explained The process, called “re-lithiation,” aims tÎż reverse the gradual loss of lithium which accounts for the battery’s performance loss.  Through an electrolysis process the scientists managed to rejuvenate lithium in battery electrodes, and then compared the performance of the “refreshed” electrodes with those from a... YouTube’s latest experimenting is translating video titles in your local language

YouTube‘s search works well enough in English, but what if you want to search for English-language videos in your native tongue? Currently, if you search for terms in your local language, you’ll get results of videos made in that language. But that might soon change. According to a report from Android Police, the video streaming giant is experimenting with a feature that you search across videos in all languages, using... Read more â€ș

BitTorrent inventor’s ‘green’ Chia cryptocurrency may not be great for the environment

It has been a big year for cryptocurrency. Bitcoin is worth six times what it was 12 months ago, and the joke currency Dogecoin has seen a hundredfold increase in price. A boom in “non-fungible tokens”, or NFTs – tradable tokens based on the same technology as cryptocurrency – is transforming the art market. With this growth has come renewed scrutiny, with critics attacking Bitcoin in particular as a speculative... Read more â€ș

When is it time for your startup to hire a corporate bard?

Huboo — a British e-commerce fulfillment startup — hired its very own corporate bard. Yup, I’m not kidding. Just like the Celtic kings of old, they actually have a person on the payroll whose job it is to tell stories of the company’s achievements through song. What’s weird about it though, is that I’ve been convinced this isn’t just a cheap marketing stunt. It’s actually a great lesson for startups... Read more â€ș

Disney finally made a retractable lightsaber that looks legit

Even for the most casual Star War fans like myself, the dream of one day owning a lightsaber that actually, you know, looks like a lightsaber is extremely alluring. Sure, existing lightsabers might look close to the real thing when all lit up, but the magic is really in the retractable blade. Meanwhile, existing retractable lightsabers tend to be cheap plastic things. But it seems Disney has finally done it.... Read more â€ș

Trump’s been posturbating on private social media for months

Donald Trump today launched a private social media site. Its membership is so exclusive that only former US presidents who’ve been impeached twice are allowed to post there. The site’s called “From The Desk of Donald J Trump.” That doesn’t quite roll of the tongue like Twitter or Facebook. But I’m holding out hope that we’ll soon find out Trump’s posts are called “Deskies.” That would be cute and this... Read more â€ș

Google just leaked its new Pixel Buds A-Series
 again

Oh Google. The company is notoriously bad at containing leaks, and after apparently leaking its upcoming budget Pixel Buds a month ago, it’s done so more explicitly this time around. As spotted by 9to5Google, the official Android account today tweeted about the new ‘Pixel Buds A-Series,’ all but confirming the headphones are on their way. Credit: 9to5Google The tweet was promptly removed a few minutes later, so it was clearly... Read more â€ș

How automation could turn capitalism into socialism

There can be no doubt that automation is the future of work. There’s plenty of debate as to what extent AI will displace workers in the near and far future, but the general consensus is that blue collar work is an endangered species. It’s only a matter of time before robots can perform skilled human labor better and cheaper than we can. What happens then? Companies will embrace automation The... Read more â€ș

Campaigners call for Spotify to disavow ‘dangerous’ speech recognition patent

Campaigners today demanded that Spotify renounces a patent for speech recognition tech that recommends music based on someone’s “emotional state, gender, age, or accent.” The patent, which was granted on January 12, outlines a method of using audio signals picked up by a microphone to infer the user’s mood and social setting. It also details ways of identifying their age, accent, and gender by analyzing their voice. The campaigners say... Read more â€ș

On Tuesday, the French parliament will vote for a new climate law aiming to support President Emmanuel Macron’s green policies, France 24 reports.  The measure includes bans on domestic flights under two and half hours that can be done by train, restrictions on renting badly insulated properties, and the designation of “ecocide” as a punishable crime. What is Matrix? And how this open-source protocol wants to change messaging?

Standards is a series explaining various tech protocols, looking at their practical implementation, and where we could find them in devices around us. At the beginning of this year, WhatsApp debuted a new privacy policy that raised many eyebrows. The updated policy aimed to make the app work better with its other Facebook-owned cousins and facilitate business chat in a smoother manner. But this displeased many users, and the mass... A giant piece of space junk will crash on Earth soon — and we don’t know where

A large piece of space debris, possibly weighing several tonnes, is currently on an uncontrolled reentry phase (that’s space speak for “out of control”), and parts of it are expected to crash down to Earth over the next few weeks. If that isn’t worrying enough, it is impossible to predict exactly where the pieces that don’t burn up in the atmosphere might land. Given the object’s orbit, the possible landing... Read more â€ș

This messenger app doesn’t use a phone number to keep your data private

WhatsApp’s privacy policy change earlier this year sparked a huge debate on how much data your messenger is collecting. After this update, plenty of people flocked to Telegram and Signal, ditching the Facebook-owned app. But apart from these two, some niche secure messengers have also come to the fore. One of them is an open-source app called Session, which doesn’t require any email ID or phone number to sign up.... Read more â€ș

Following Volkswagen Group and Toyota, Ford and BMW are investing big in solid-state battery tech, which promises to be a game changer for EVs. Back in 2019, Ford had already put some money down on the US solid-battery firm Solid Power, but now together with BMW they made an investment of $130 million. And that’s not all. The investment group also includes Volta Energy Technologies, a venture capital firm that... Read more â€ș
