Apple snaps up ex-Google AI leader who quit in the wake of Timnit Gebru’s firing

Apple has hired former Google AI scientist Samy Bengio, who resigned from the Big G following the controversial firing of ethics researcher Timnit Gebru. Bengio will lead a new AI research unit and report to fellow ex-Googler John Giannandrea, Reuters reports. In his role at Google, Bengio oversaw hundreds of workers and was a strong supporter of Gebru and Margaret Mitchell, who co-led the ethical AI teams before their terminations.... Read more ›

What is Matrix? And how this open-source protocol wants to change messaging?

Standards is a series explaining various tech protocols, looking at their practical implementation, and where we could find them in devices around us. At the beginning of this year, WhatsApp debuted a new privacy policy that raised many eyebrows. The updated policy aimed to make the app work better with its other Facebook-owned cousins and facilitate business chat in a smoother manner. But this displeased many users, and the mass... A giant piece of space junk will crash on Earth soon — and we don’t know where

A large piece of space debris, possibly weighing several tonnes, is currently on an uncontrolled reentry phase (that’s space speak for “out of control”), and parts of it are expected to crash down to Earth over the next few weeks. If that isn’t worrying enough, it is impossible to predict exactly where the pieces that don’t burn up in the atmosphere might land. Given the object’s orbit, the possible landing... Read more ›

This messenger app doesn’t use a phone number to keep your data private

WhatsApp’s privacy policy change earlier this year sparked a huge debate on how much data your messenger is collecting. After this update, plenty of people flocked to Telegram and Signal, ditching the Facebook-owned app. But apart from these two, some niche secure messengers have also come to the fore. One of them is an open-source app called Session, which doesn’t require any email ID or phone number to sign up.... Read more ›

Following Volkswagen Group and Toyota, Ford and BMW are investing big in solid-state battery tech, which promises to be a game changer for EVs. Back in 2019, Ford had already put some money down on the US solid-battery firm Solid Power, but now together with BMW they made an investment of $130 million. And that’s not all. The investment group also includes Volta Energy Technologies, a venture capital firm that... Read more ›

Study: Loot boxes in games are enticing, but they don’t actually manipulate you into spending

The ABC’s latest Four Corners report is an investigation into how video games are “deliberately designed to get people hooked”. It describes the use of gambling-like “loot boxes” in games, the hotly debated notion of video game addiction and, to a lesser extent, the “predatory techniques” of using user data and AI to increase spending in freemium games (free to play games which are monetized through in-app transactions and advertising).... The 3 most important lessons I learned as a bootstrapped founder

Let me start with a bold statement. You can build a SaaS company from the ground up, without any outside help. And the best thing is, you don’t need luck or privilege to bootstrap. You can achieve it with tons of blood, sweat, and tears — along with valuing every penny and using every resource at your disposal. Then after some trial-and-error, you’ll get there. I had an idea, and... Read more ›

Sex bots, virtual friends, VR lovers: tech is changing the way we interact, and not always for the better

Twenty-first century technologies such as robots, virtual reality (VR) and artificial intelligence (AI) are creeping into every corner of our social and emotional lives — hacking how we form friendships, build intimacy, fall in love and get off. In my recently-published book, I consider the possibilities, both terrifying and inspiring, offered by these “artificially intimate” technologies. On one hand, these tools can help deliver much-needed support. On the other, they... Read more ›

Apple analyst predicts an 8-inch folding iPhone will arrive in 2023

Ming-Chi Kuo, the usually-reliable Apple analyst, is at it again with another prediction years in advance. According to Kuo, Apple may be planning to release its foldable iPhone in 2023. As reported by MacRumors, Kuo claims that the foldable iPhone might sport an “8-inch QHD+ flexible OLED display.” Kuo estimates that the company expects to sell 15-20 million folding units in 2023 “based on Apple’s requested capacity plan.” Interestingly, Kuo... How politicians manipulate the masses with simple AI

We’re three and a half years away from electing another president here in the US, but it’s never to early too prepare ourselves for the impending crapshow that is US politics. The good news is, going forward, you won’t have to think so much. The age of data-based politics is coming to a close thanks to the innovations created by the 2016 Donald Trump campaign and the counteracting tactics employed... Read more ›

Massive stellar flare from our closest star is a bad sign for aliens

The Sun isn’t the only star to produce stellar flares. On April 21, 2021, a team of astronomers published new research describing the brightest flare ever measured from Proxima Centauri in ultraviolet light. To learn about this extraordinary event – and what it might mean for any life on the planets orbiting Earth’s closest neighboring star – I spoke with Parke Loyd, an astrophysicist at Arizona State University and co-author... MG wants your money to build its first electric sports car

Specs about the MG Cyberster Concept were out even before its official debut at Shanghai Auto Show. It’s a two-door, two-seater sports car with an eye-catching, futuristic design that I’d say is a bit haunting. Maybe it’s just me, but its grille reminds me of Venom’s smile – yes, Spiderman’s villain. Credit: MG - Edited It’s expected range of 800km and speed of 100kph in less than three seconds aren’t...
