The European Commission issued preliminary findings on Friday accusing Meta of building Facebook and Instagram to be addictive, giving the company a formal opportunity to respond before Brussels reaches a final decision that could trigger fines of up to 6% of its global annual revenue. Based on Meta’s 2025 turnover of roughly $201 billion, that [

Cambridge scientists say new AI tool could diagnose dementia from a single brain scan

Scientists at Cambridge University have developed an AI system that they believe could diagnose dementia from a single brain scan. Up front: Doctors currently diagnose dementia through multiple cognitive tests and brain scans. This process can take between four to 12 weeks, according to the Alzheimer’s Society.... Read more â€ș

Composer Moritz Geist built music-making robots out of Polestar 2 parts

Several attempts have been made to give sound to quiet EVs, as in most countries it’s a legal requirement for electric vehicles to emit a pedestrian warning sound at low speed. To name a few examples, there’s the soundscape by designer and musician Yuri Suzuki, and the BMW i4’s soundtrack, developed by Hans Zimmer.  But to turn the sounds of an EV into an independent musical composition is a first,... OpenAI’s system for translating plain English into code looks impressive — and scary

OpenAI has released a new version of Codex, an AI system that translates written language into code. The company unveiled the upgraded software on Tuesday. It looks like a seriously powerful programming tool — and a slightly scary one. In a live demo, OpenAI used the system to convert written English commands into simple games and websites. Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, said the system is merely a rudimentary version of... Read more â€ș

OEMs test which over-the-air updates you want (and will pay for)

Ok, we’re a fair few years off commercially available autonomous vehicles. But today’s cars are advanced analytic data centers on wheels, with capabilities that can be added, amended, or expanded with a simple over-the-air (OTA) update. Automakers can choose when (and if) to turn on certain features–and it’s at a price. This week writer Martin SFP Bryant raised the issue on Twitter in response to the latest Mercedes-Benz update .... Samsung’s Z Fold and Flip 3 could be the first folding phones for regular people

It’s been a couple of years since folding phones first hit the market, but I’ve yet to actually see one in the wild. And it’s not hard to imagine why; despite their futuristic promise, folding phones have typically been too fragile and expensive for regular people — or even many power users — to actually consider. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3, announced today at the company’s... Read more â€ș

Backlash grows against decision to grant patent to AI system

At first glance, a recently granted South African patent relating to a “food container based on fractal geometry” seems fairly mundane. The innovation in question involves interlocking food containers that are easy for robots to grasp and stack. On closer inspection, the patent is anything but mundane. That’s because the inventor is not a human being – it is an artificial intelligence (AI) system called DABUS. DABUS (which stands for... Read more â€ș

Is space infinite? Here are 5 expert opinions

We’ve known for some time now our universe is expanding, and in recent years discovered this was happening considerably faster than we’d expected. Yet despite momentous innovations in telescope and satellite technology, it’s thought much of what’s out there in the cosmos lies beyond our line of sight — beyond the “observable universe”, as it’s called. It also means we don’t know with any certainty what shape the universe as... Read more â€ș

Audi has unveiled its Skysphere concept car and, boy, if that’s the future of EVs, I’m sold. Are hydrogen fuel cells the future of green transport? Sorta

Around the world, governments are implementing policies to promote electric vehicles to reduce oil consumption, climate-related emissions and improve local air quality. Most of the attention is on plug-in electric vehicles. But there’s another option, Hydrogen Fuel Cells (HFCs), an electrochemical power generator that combines hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity, with water and heat as byproducts. HFCs form energy that OEMs can use to power anything from commercial vehicles... Read more â€ș

OnePlus teases a dual-screen folding phone, but don’t get your hopes up

Just a day before Samsung’s folding phone event, OnePlus appears to be teasing a dual-screen device of its own.
