Don’t be dull, NASA — let us explore some strange space moons

It’s been 30 years since Nasa last visited Venus, with the Magellan orbiter in 1990. Now, two new missions have been selected to explore the deadly atmosphere, crushing pressures, and volcanic landscape. The process dates back to February 2020, when Nasa announced that four missions were to undergo a nine-month peer-review process for feasibility. They were all part of the Discovery program, started by Nasa in 1992 to bring together... Read more â€ș

Dear EV makers, the pope doesn’t need ANY MORE electric popemobiles

A few days ago, Nissan donated an all-electric LEAF sedan to the Vatican to help the small state in its environmental goal to gradually replace its service vehicles with an all-electric fleet. It’s part of Pope Francis’ commitment to turn the Vatican carbon neutral by 2050, as he announced in December 2020. The Church also plans to increase the number of charging stations, especially around several of the major basilicas... Read more â€ș

Study: People are more likely to exploit trustworthy AI than other humans

Cooperation between people holds society together, but new research suggests we’ll be less willing to compromise with “benevolent” AI. The study explored how humans will interact with machines in future social situations — such as self-driving cars that they encounter on the road — by asking participants to play a series of social dilemma games. The participants were told that they were interacting with either another human or an AI... Read more â€ș

Yo, plastic soup! These tiny swimming bots are coming to destroy you

Microplastics are everywhere, from the Mediterranean seafloor to Mount Everest, and the tiny fragments of litter can take hundreds of years to degrade. They can also absorb heavy metals and pollutants that could harm humans or animals that inadvertently consume them. At less than 5mm in length, the polymers are hard to remove manually. But there may be a more efficient method of eliminating the plastic scourge: attacking them with... Read more â€ș

My off-grid weekend in an EV proved that my friends are idiots

I’ve been thinking a lot about what it’s like to live with an EV recently. Doing what I do, I often get friends asking me what car they should buy. I always give stellar advice that would save my friends money, time, and get them a great car for their needs. Do they ever follow my advice? No, no they don’t. With the ever present climate doom, I try to... Read more â€ș

Laser-powered microscopes can destroy some biological samples — quantum tech fixes that

You’ve probably seen images of scientists peering down a microscope, looking at objects invisible to the naked eye. Indeed, microscopes are indispensable to our understanding of life. They are just as indispensable to biotechnology and medicine, for instance in our response to diseases such as COVID-19. However, the best light microscopes have hit a fundamental barrier – the bright laser light used to illuminate tiny objects can also destroy them.... Read more â€ș

Facebook’s idea of 2 cameras on a watch gives me the creeps

Apple might’ve leaked the ‘M1X MacBook Pro’ on YouTube, and no one noticed

Here’s a fascinating little mystery. Going into WWDC 2021, it seemed quite likely Apple would announce the rumored redesigned MacBook Pro, along with a more powerful update to the M1 processor, perhaps called the M2. That didn’t happen, so many concluded the leakers just got it wrong this time. But then @maxbalzer_ on Twitter noticed something interesting about the WWDC live stream on YouTube: Apple tagged it with the keywords... Read more â€ș

Trump just shat on 46M Bitcoin HODLers — Good luck in 2024

The last US presidential election featured the highest voter turnout in the nation’s history. The candidates received a combined 155.4 million votes with just over seven million separating them. That’s a margin of about 4%. By that math it would seem like incredibly poor judgment if a candidate were to intentionally disrespect a group of people representing as much as 20% of the US adult voting population. Enter the 45th... Read more â€ș
